I missed a call from somebody today, and when I touched the "Phone" application to find out the time of the call, I got the following message:
"The application Contacts (process com.sonyericsson.android.social phonebook has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I now get this message every time I attempt to use the phonebook, which basically means I can no longer make calls. I can still receive calls, and everything else seems to work okay.
Shutting down the phone and re-starting it did not fix the problem.

After uninstalling gmail, market and google play the problem is solved. Before I tried all the other solutions proposed in this post... now my phone is just for calling and using whatssap... it's enough for the nonce, but I didn't buy an xperia U to have such limited performances. Really sad right now.
You can't get rid of any of the built in applications (at least not by standard methods), so they should still be on there. Just not with the latest updates. Google is an integral part of these Android phones, so it can't be removed completely.
It is sad, but for the moment, nothing can be done. At least our phones' primary function can be used again.
So what? In practice is the same, I can not use gmail, facebook or market without updating them or reinstalling google play, I tried. So I can not install new apps or use my phone for social networks but whatssap, this problem is really annoying.
Xperia X10 owner here, Still have the problem and I don't want to uninstall whatsapp as I need it. Is there any other solution?
Also the app works after I reboot untill I boot whatsapp then contacts does not work.
Hi,
You should be able to use WhatsApp without issue if you download previous version of it.
There are multiple sources online where you could fetch the previous release, or even better ask WhatsApp support for it.
This is of course only temporary solution, but at least you will have functional applications.
Don't forget to uninstall current version before installing another.
