I missed a call from somebody today, and when I touched the "Phone" application to find out the time of the call, I got the following message:
"The application Contacts (process com.sonyericsson.android.social phonebook has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I now get this message every time I attempt to use the phonebook, which basically means I can no longer make calls. I can still receive calls, and everything else seems to work okay.
Shutting down the phone and re-starting it did not fix the problem.

Irish82: You can't remove it completely, it's built into the OS.
Have you removed your Facebook account from auto-synch settings? That seems to have fixed it for a lot of people.
same thing was happening to me but i found out that
it was crashing cause of wtsapp.
If urs is crashing too try unistalling the apps which contain ur phone number or any contact details :smileysmileywink:
Hi everyone.
After uninstalling, installing and rebooting a thousand times, I think I've located who is causing this issue. It is *not* any WhatsApp version. It is the Google Play Services app (which was updated recently), and that is the app you should uninstall in order to fix the problem. This app cannot be uninstalled from the Play Store, so you should do it from the "App management" menu of your phone.
Hi. Same problem here. Phonebook stopping and unable to make phone calls.
Unistalled facebook updates, but the problem persists.
Deleting whatsapp, facebook and twitter accounts from sync list allows phonebook to work again (no reboot needed).
If I access the phonebook (once it works) and then re-log on in twitter and facebook, the phonebook keeps working for a while. (I think it remains in memory and therefore works until android OS closes it to free memory up, and when it needs reloading error message shows up again). (Or may be it remains working until some other app screws things up again).
Question: Will unistalling Google Play Services App cause any other issues? (i.e. unable to access google play to install or update apps?)
I ask this because there is only an option to unistall it, and no option to uninstall upgrades.
I am running stock (out of the box) android 2.3.7 with no modifications other than some apps installed, some apps updated and some widget/icon reordering on home screens.

Without Google Play Services you cannot run the latest versions of YouTube and Google+ apps, so you should uninstall updates of these apps in order to be able to run them.
Don't worry about uninstalling Google Play Services, it's easy to install it again if you want: just launch any app that needs it, such as the latest versions of YouTube or Google+, and it will give you the option to install it.
Hi again. Thanks for answer.
Now that you mentioned it, I remember I also unistalled google+ updates as well as facebook updates.
Do you think google play services will be updated soon to fix this issue?
I think I will wait a few days to see if this app is updated, (going to sync list to delete accounts each time I need to use phone for calls). So, when there is an update abailable I receive the notification and try it out.
Hi.

Hi,
I have managed to fix this issue with my phone....! (For now!)
What I did is as follows - hope this helps you guys out:
This took me about 30 mins to do as a process.
So far, so good. Phone is working well - I think the cause was one of the Google+ updates - but I'm not certain. Just glad it's working again...
Hope that helps folks.
