Phonebook has stopped working

I missed a call from somebody today, and when I touched the "Phone" application to find out the time of the call, I got the following message:

"The application Contacts (process com.sonyericsson.android.social phonebook  has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

I now get this message every time I attempt to use the phonebook, which basically means I can no longer make calls. I can still receive calls, and everything else seems to work okay.

Shutting down the phone and re-starting it did not fix the problem.

We have identified this issue on some units and the source of issue resides in a Google Play Services update (4.4.49). Google has been contacted about this and have confirmed a fix for Google Play Services version 4.4.50 or higher. In the mean time you can either remove any accounts that depend on Google Play Services like, Facebook, Viber, Skype etc. You can also choose to uninstall the latest Google Play Services update but then losing access to some Google applications.

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

First of all try to clear data for phone under settings > apps > all > phone > clear data > restart the phone and try again.

Let me know how it works out.

I can't see a 'phone' option listed. The closest I could find to the path specified was:

Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All

But there's no 'phone' option there.

eta: the actual making of calls seems to be working...if I can access a number via the text message screen, then I can dial out. But I can't access any other contacts, or dial any new numbers, because I can't get to the dialler.
