Phonebook has stopped working

I missed a call from somebody today, and when I touched the "Phone" application to find out the time of the call, I got the following message:

"The application Contacts (process com.sonyericsson.android.social phonebook  has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

I now get this message every time I attempt to use the phonebook, which basically means I can no longer make calls. I can still receive calls, and everything else seems to work okay.

Shutting down the phone and re-starting it did not fix the problem.

1. Disable automatic updates on Play Store.
2. Uninstall «Google Play Services» on applications management menu.
3. Current versions of Google+ and YouTube won't work. Do NOT install Google Play Services if asked! Instead, uninstall app upgrades and go back to stock version.
4. Everything will be fine.

dear alexander,

I believe some of the solutions proposed so far are still not working for us. By the number count of views of these messages I am guessing the problem is very widespread, and thus it might be a good idea if somebody at Sony addresses it specifically, since it seems to be rather widespread and serious (basically not being able to make phonecalls for roughly half a week now).

Many thanks for your further advice,

m

I have same problem:

IF I uninstall WHATSAPP, Phonebook WORKS.

IF I install WHATSAPP, Phonebook STOP to work.

This is caused also if I reset the phone completely and when flashed stock rom again.

This ISSUE has begun when I changed my SIMCARD... But rechanging again doesn't solve the problem.

Seems that the problem is caused by an update of Whatsapp...

Hello,
I'm having same problem on my Xperia U too...It is happening from last 4-5 days...Nowadays I'm making calls from messaging atleast I can make calls...But I'm unable to see missed calls and also I can't save any number to contacts...I just want to know that if I'll clear data of contacts then all contacts will be deleted or not?

We have identified this issue on some units and the source of issue resides in a Google Play Services update (4.4.49). Google has been contacted about this and have confirmed a fix for Google Play Services version 4.4.50 or higher. In the mean time you can either remove any accounts that depend on Google Play Services like, Facebook, Viber, Skype etc. You can also choose to uninstall the latest Google Play Services update but then losing access to some Google applications.
