Xperia Z1 camera - blurry pictures with noise and washed colours

Hi Everyone,

I'm a little concerned about the performance of the Xperia Z1 camera.

I had read already in some reviews that the pictures are not too sharp and the colours are washed, but now i have experienced it myself.

This camera should be way better than the camera in the iPhone 5, but i'm getting sharper images and more realistic colours with the iPhone. There is a lot of noise in the Z1 pictures, the Superior Auto mode is not getting things right, neither in focus, picture sharpness or colors.

I was expecting this camera to be very sharp and accurate, but i found out it's not near that. As per all the effort Sony has put in advertising the Z1 camera, i think we should get a software update and improve the camera a lot.

Do you think this is a software problem? Every Xperia Z1 review i've read points that out.

Also I when I tried cleaning the lens I had no idea that you cant open the back of the phone and I tried doing so and now it is cracked. Sigh.

i have updated my xperia z1 in lolipop 5.0.2 . After updating my phone's back camera performes like a cheaper or unbranned phone's . pictures which are captured at night with flash, are very very washy and unfocused .  Over all back camera performances are very very poor.  it should be fixed . What can we do ?

I have the exact same problem with all 3 of my Xperia phones. I agree with Yorkie above, it should be a software issue and can be fixed. I also suspect it has something to do with apps you download to your phone that deemed a security risk for Sony. I'm going to write Sony about their product design fault.

Hello Friends :smileyhappy:, like you I am also very disappointed with the performance of the Z1 camera. Washed colors, low detailed images and focus issues are some of the common problems that we are all facing. I am not a professional photographer but I hope the points below may help you to solve our problem upto some extent.

1. Stock Camera is good for normal conditions but not in all situations. In order to get the best use of it, trying to capture in Manual Mode and then adjust the lens focus according to your needs. I recommend you to use a Single Auto Focus for macros and Multi Auto Focus for distant objects.Also keep the value of iso 50 under daylight conditions. During the night, the camera takes very blurrish pictures so I suggest you to use third-party applications such as Procapture or Camera FV 5.

2. Camera FV5 is an excellent choice to take great photos in very high quality. Just go to Settings from the application> Photos encoding settings> File Format - PNG.
This will help you to take a more detailed picture, but the picture size may vary between 20-30 mb. After shooting, it also took time to process your photos in png mode. So do not close the application until the image has been processed completely. Here is a sample photo taken using this application.

3. Pro Capture : This camera app I frequently use during the night photo shoots. It has a privileged Reduce Noise feature that helps to reduce a lot of noise when shooting in low light situations. Simply point to Shooting mode > Reduce Noise. Also keep the Focus Mode to Continuous to avoid blurry images.

Also take care of common things like the camera lens must be clean, use a tripod or keep the camera steady when taking pictures, trying to capture in good lighting conditions to get the best results.The camera is awesome on Z1 but it need to be understood and continuously to play with it will surely make you an expert.:smileysmileythumbsup:

I had similar problems with Z1 camera after I got its broken display replaced at a local repair shop. There was a small scratch mark on the transparent lens cover portion of the back cover. I noticed only after I removed the back cover which was loosly glued by the technician and came off easily. The camera worked very well without the back cover. Now I will get the back cover replaced. The scratch was not visible with back cover in place. Only when it was removed and held against light, it could be seen.
