Phonebook has stopped working

I missed a call from somebody today, and when I touched the "Phone" application to find out the time of the call, I got the following message:

"The application Contacts (process com.sonyericsson.android.social phonebook  has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

I now get this message every time I attempt to use the phonebook, which basically means I can no longer make calls. I can still receive calls, and everything else seems to work okay.

Shutting down the phone and re-starting it did not fix the problem.

Well how about that! Removing my Facebook account from Auto-synch settings did the trick! Nice one. Slightly_smiling_Face

My phonebook and in coming  phone stopped working. I have spent all evening deleting all my app udates and uninstalling all that I could one by one shutting down then opening again. Lastly I uninstalled all the Google And Google +  and after turning off my phone and starting it again I now have my contacts and my phone pad back to make calls. It was definateley GOOGLE apps at fault. Hope this helps you.

hi, guys! for 2 days already i'm facing the very same problem and it's indeed annoying and serious and i am getting nuts already. i've tried so far almost everything i could find as advise online.. starting from pc campanion, over to update service, (trying) to uninstall google+ and fb.. but so far - nope! no contacts are back and i still can't access my phonebook or make any calls.

if any of you guys found meanwhile another solution, please share. we'd all appreciate it.

or we'll all throw away our xperias.

and sony people, please do take this all into serious consideration and help us fix our phones.

Stacey123 - yeah it is annoying, as it basically means we can't use Facebook with our phones anymore (each time I log in it automatically re-adds my account to the auto-synch list and the problem starts anew). But at least I can actually phone people again.

Facebook itself doesn't seem to be at the heart of the problem, though, because it always worked fine before, and even if I revert to the factory version the problem remains. It looks like it's something that's recently been added to either Contacts itself, or possibly an Android update, that has made these two applications incompatible.

Josue1018, Marisa_Amaral and anch - have you tried Settings > Accounts & synch > disabling auto-synch and removing all accounts (make sure you're logged out of Facebook), as well as uninstalling WhatApp, disabling auto-update in GooglePlay settings and reverting all Google apps to their factory versions? (Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > go through all Google and Facebook related apps and "uninstall updates") If you've added something else that uses contact info, try uninstalling that too.

eta: Also, I'd be interested to know if this problem is exclusive to Xperia users, or is other Android phones are experiencing a similar thing. Does anybody have access to, or know somebody with, a Samsung or HTC phone that's suffering from the same thing?

@ suburban_fox: In Google Play another Dutchman complains about loosing his contacts after updating WhatsApp. Although he doesn't specify what phone he has, it doesn't seem to be an Xperia.
