With secure mode, are you referring to safe mode? Please lick the blue highlighted text for a in-depth step-by-step guide on how to reboot to safe mode. Try to see if you experience the same behaviour in that mode.
In addition, could you test the microphone in Diagnostics to see if it sounds better there? To do so, go to Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Microphone.

Now you are unable to hear it in safe mode as well? In that case I recommend that you try performing a software repair using Xperia Companion to see if that helps.
