I have a VAIO VPCL12S1E/S which has a Geforce GT 240M Card. I checked the Nvidia website automatic scanner which indicates that I am on version 187.83 and I should be able to upgrade to at least 258.96 drivers but I've downloaded and tried to install them? Only to be told that My system has no graphics driver which can be updated? Surely that don't make sense

I cannot make any recommendations - this decision must be yours to use non-Sony drivers and I cannot recommend it.
Your L12 has a notebook graphics chip. Notebook nVidia drivers are updated by the computer manufacturer not by nVidia - in this case Sony.
New versions of the nVidia driver appear about every two weeks and very few of these updates have a performance advantage, so Sony only update the driver when there is a reason to do so - not just to have the latest version. Sony test new drivers exhaustively to ensure compatability with your Vaio and unless you have a particular problem, it is safer to use the drivers customised for your particular Vaio.
If you must have the latest drivers for some particular reason, you can look at this website where the latest drivers are available. In most cases you need to modify the installer .INF file to get it to install and you do this at your own risk as on some Vaio models like the Z-Series, some of the Vaio's functionality like Speed/Stamina switching is built into the graphics driver.

It's for my games mainly as to why I want drivers really. (I have a few top end games and the latest drivers would help) on that site what should I be looking for inparticulair? What download would be the best for me?

I'll look about and see hat I can come up with on there. I always like to keep things up to date as far as I can (Always the more up to date things are the best) Loving this system too so far) Just needs a wee memory upgrade and we're all good.
