Sony Xperia Z only charging when switched off ?

My Sony Xperia Z (8-months old) will only charge when switched off? If I plug in USB wall charger when phone is on then it will confirm charger connected, begin to charge, lightning bolt in battery icon present, red LED illuminates but after 30 seconds charging stops/suspended without warning or reason.

I have the latest Android 4.3 update (10/Jan/2013) but this did not fix problem.

I have tried a different wall charger but this did not fix the problem.

I have tried a reset by holding power button and volume + key and waiting for three vibrates but this did not fix the problem.

I can't remove battery as this is a fixed battery design. Is their a wireless charging option available?

My phone is still under warranty with T-Mobile/Sony (24-months).

Any tips or suggestions would be helpful.

My Xperia Z went back to the T-Mobile UK approved repair centre SBE Ltd http://sbeglobalservice.com/uk/aftermarket-service-solutions/repair-services and I went back to using my old Motorola Defy. No contact from SBE Ltd although I was able to follow updates about my repair through the T-Mobile/Orange/EE Repair Tracker service https://repairs.ee.co.uk/ which showed my phone as received. A week later out of the blue a new Xperia Z handset arrived with a note from EE saying replacement handset. I was a bit shocked and it did not say why they replaced the handset but at least I know the warranty is good with T-Mobile.

My guess is SBE Ltd inspected handset, contacted T-Mobile or parent company EE with repair cost and T-Mobile decided it would be cheaper to send me a new handset which they will get considerably cheaper at cost than I would at retail prices.

So I'm none the wiser as to why my Xperia Z stopped charging let's hope my new Z lasts longer than 8-months. Thank you T-Mobile.

Thanks I've just booked my phone in for diagnostic/repair with T-Mobile UK Repair Centre 08454122993 and after a troubleshooting session with one of their agents. They gave me the option of either sending a pre-paid jiffy bag for me to send phone direct to the repair centre or I could visit my nearest T-Mobile store and they can arrange to send it and offer a loan phone while it's away. I chose jiffy bag as I have a spare phone. Agent advised me to transfer all data, music, photos and videos to SD card as any repair may wipe phone memory. Agent told me to remove SD card and SIM card from handset before sending it.

I'm having the same problem since two days ago.
I have my xperia since April and it always got fully charged in about two hours. When I realized it was only charging when off I left it plugged the whole night (turned off), and the next morning it reached only 65% percent of the battery.
My computer is telling me that the usb is malfunctioning but I tried different wires, so I was thinking that maybe the connector in the phone is kind of broken. The car charger is working when turned off as well.
I'm taking it to the service because I purchase it with 2 years of warranty, I hope they give me a good solution !
Now I know there is a couple of persons that had the same issue I wonder if this could be any kind of bug.
If anyone knows the cause of this issue please let me know.

Regards

Today I receive the answer from **bleep** Smith (New Zealand). They said that the warrant won't cover the repair because is due a physical damage (USB port broken), and it will cost me 237 NZD (196.19 USD). The phone cost me 1000 NZD, and now you can but it for 750 NZD. That's an abuse.
I did a little research on that topic and I realized  there is MANY people reporting the same failure.
You can check this threads and facebook group:

In some cases people got brand new xperia back, but in many they had to paid for the repair or buy the dock charger. It disappoints me that Sony is no taking care of this, changing for free the usb port or advincing the users that we should be using the dock charger due this weak usb port.
I hope **bleep** Smith found a cheaper solution for my case, because you can buy the replacement only  for 1.99USD, and other companys that fix phones do it for less money (but if I do so, I would lost the warranty).
