@ Gabriel
In my case I returned the device back and get a refund. I contacted also Sony customer service but there were any solutions other than those mentioned in this forum. You can send to an authorized repair center if you're lucky to have one in your vicinity.
@ Lamer
Thanks! I don't have an authorized repair center nearby, this is one reason I keep looking for answers. Other is that as it is almost surely software related, there is no real certainty that it won't happen again if I just replace the device...
Thanks anyway!
I am facing the same problem as well. With me its the "recent apps" button, the one on the right of the "home" screen button. It behaving very erratically. Contacted Sony Support and they repied with an email which had instructions on how to do a software repait using PC Software companion. Followed instruction everything to the tee. After the repair the button seemed to work consistenly for about 10-15 minutes. I was happy that it started wrking again. Then I put it down and was away for a while. I come back, pick up the phone and to my surprise the old problem was back. I am sure its got to do with Andriod 5.1.1 upgrade. Will have to talk to Sony again.
I own a Sony Z3 compact which is 1 year and 6 months old. When it was launched, I instantly took a liking to it. Being a smaller version of flag-ship, the Xperia Z3, Sony did not compromise on the specs on its smaller cousin. The best part was the battery life on the device. I could easily survive 3-4 days with one charge. A year later problem standing cropping up left and right. After every Android build upgrade, core functionalities would stop working. First serious problem came after Android Lollipop was released. The virtual navigation buttons became non-responsive especially the RECENT TASK KEY. The behavior became too erratic. 90% of the time it would not work. Contacted Sony, tried to repair using Sony PC Companion, Factory reset etc etc. Nothing worked. This went on for time, until Sony released a next build not Marshmallow. It seemed to fix the issue.
Things were stable for few months. Then Marshmallow comes along and wrecks havoc on the phone. Try navigating to any screen, the phone will automatically switch over to previous screen and/or redo the previous action. So for e.g. I phone someone and disconnect, the phone would go automatically go back to "Contacts" screen and dial the first person on the contact list. I made sure there are no viruses, In fact i have a licensed Norton anti-virus software already running in the background. Again did a factory reset as well as repair Sony PC Companion. about 5 times. That didn't work either. All 3 navigation soft key buttons now freeze in portrait mode. Open an application and I am simply stuck. Cant navigate to the Home or back or view the the recent history. Have to flip the phone to landscape mode to carry out any action. But the most frustrating and embarrassing behavior of the phone is when it starts automatically taking you to the previous screen and starts as dialing a contact on its own. Has anybody noticed such agonizing fits with the device. Did a diagnostic tests several times but all hardware seems to be working fine. I am out of warranty and Sony don't even have solution of this. The hardware and software are not harmony anymore. I have never dropped my phone. I even discarded the screen protector. But the problem remains. Never thought It would come to this after spending a fortune on it. The phone should have technically lasted at least 5 yrs. So disappointed with Sony. Never going to recommend a Sony phone to anyone.
Have you contacted your Local support to get your device inspected as this is a user based forum?
Yes I did and they suspect that some hardware or may be screen needs replacement which is going to cost at least $200. I wonder if its really worth it.
