Do not use under water

When did Sony change their statement on using Xperia pruducts under water? They used to say up to 1.5m in depth for a few minutes, now it clearly states do not use under water.

Also noticed this is now the advice for previous products that used to say it was OK to use under water, not just the latest Z5.

Sony products are no longer water proof (what I thought anyway). Watch out!

Sony still states the device is IP68 ingress protected when it is new. not 6months old and could have been missused in so many diffrent ways.

os as stated by Sony

"The IP rating of your device was achieved in laboratory conditions in standby mode, so you shouldn't use the device underwater for taking pictures, for example. Do not use the device to take photos while performing any type of activity underwater, including diving or snorkeling."

"Everyday wear and tear, along with damage to your device, can reduce its ability to stay protected from dust and moisture."

I have a z5 compact, I've run it under heavy tap water several times with massive amounts of pressure going straight into the headphone jack. I've had no issues. I wouldn't wanna test leaving it in water for extended periods of time though

Goodmorning everyone

I would like to hear from people who have been able to use the phone after being underwater. Because on the forums I only found people with issues after (usually small amounts of) water exposure. This has caused me to be hesitant to cleaning my phone under water / using it near water. Which is a shame as the waterproofness was the main reason I bought the phone in the first place.

I have 4 friends who own Z3C and they continuously use it for under water photography, without any problem whatsoever. Has anyone here done that on the z5c?

Kind regards

I have Z5C, and it has been water tested since day 1.

i usually wash my phone under tap. just making sure the flap is well sealed. and that i don't apply extra pressure when handling it when in water.

there is an instruction on the quick start guide on how to dry yout phone after being used in water. if you have questions feel free to post them here

and with regards with using it under water, i did use it once taking a picture under a water fall, so that might count as "underwater use"

though the phone is marketed having IP6/8 ingress protection. sony doesn't anymore reccomend to submerge your phone underwater.

Bear in mind that this is a support forums, so you'll finds people with problems with their phone posting here. People rarely post positive feedback if they manage to use the phone under water without damaging it Slightly_smiling_Face

Marketing departments for all manufacturers should stop using "waterproof". It gives the false sense of security that "my phone is solid and can be dropped in to the ocean, so long as it's approximately 1 meter deep, and it does not matter if there are hurricane force storm conditions above, because the manual does not stipulate, therefore my phone will never break so long as it is not subject to these conditions for the prescribed time!"

As opposed to 'waterresistant' - 'hmmm... yeah if I accidently dropped the phone in to the pool and don't rinse off the chlorine... There's a chance that it might lose its water tight integrity because the seals get brittle when exposed to chemicals'

Then I wouldn't expect the phone to be impervious to water damage

See. Even the topic now says Do not use under water.

I have owned mine for a couple of months now and cleaned it under a strong restaurant tap many times. It's in the dishpit so the water pressure is really high, I've done that about 4 times once while recording video all times while operating the device for about 20-30 seconds. I think it's really just a matter of a lack of quality control/damage. Some slightly damaged devices will leak faster than well taken care of ones. I think a good quality z5 compact will last the factory tested amount of 30 mins underwater so as long as your phone is in good condition (use a case and screen protector) I wouldn't worry. Sony is mostly just releasing these statements to cover their backs.

chlorine makes the seals brittle? Really? All tap water contains some tho
