Do not use under water

When did Sony change their statement on using Xperia pruducts under water? They used to say up to 1.5m in depth for a few minutes, now it clearly states do not use under water.

Also noticed this is now the advice for previous products that used to say it was OK to use under water, not just the latest Z5.

Sony products are no longer water proof (what I thought anyway). Watch out!

Sony need to be very clear on this as there are so many reports of water damage that Sony will not accept as a device fault.

They have marketing information showing the use of the devices under water and yet also statements as I have posted above.

Sony give a definative statement please and stand by it.

does seem a mixed message...  

the website says the standard X5 is....    "ip68" & states safe for a dunk in the bath   and then sends you to a "what this means" link

under that ip68 says IPX8. "Protected against the effects of continued immersion in water at depths greater than 1 metre. The exact conditions are specified for each device by the manufacturer"    unlike 67 that is to 30 minutes...

i am wondering as that strange disclaimer comes from the xperia 5 range page and states phone is IP65/68  (65 being just able to take a short low pressure blast from a jet wash)  if not all the phones are the same rating...  maybe  the premium are 65?

the spec page says the premium is ip65/68...   while the spec page of the Z5 standard is simply ip68 )

the x5 compact page specs doesnt state any ip where the other 2 do on their specs, but the disclaimer at the bottom is the ip65/68 one at issue again

and finally, i wonder if that ip65 refers to a specific colour choice like the shiney gold premium ?

My guess is that they are ip-certified but Sony has written that text just because people use them under conditions that aren't guaranteed by the ingress rating. That way they will get less claims for warranty repairs.

Hi guys!

Our new Xperia Z5 is protected from water ingress according to the IPx5/x8 standard, which is the highest water protection featured in mobile handsets. The tests for this rating also include the slow submersion in a fresh water tank up to 1.5m for a duration of 30 minutes. Moving or operating the device while it is submerged is not tested during the laboratory tests. There are also many environmental factors which we could not assess (e.g. water movement or water pressure changes during the movement), if a device is used underwater. Therefore we recommend not submerge our Xperia Z5 in water.
