Seems that it's happening on 5g network, and only after latest update. Before update it was fine. For now try switching to 2.4 GHz. Hope they will fix this issue soon.
I’ve got a (German) Xperia XZ with annoying WiFi problems: The connection drops every few minutes due to an ‘authentication problem’, even if the phone is very close to the router. The only way to reconnect is to switch the phone to flight mode for a moment and reconnect afterwards. After two useless attempts to repair the phone by the provider and Xperia Care, I (once more) tried different WiFi settings of my router. I finally discovered, that the connection fails, when the router is using 'band steering', i.e. automatically switches from 2.4 to 5 GHz or reverse. Band steering was introduced by the latest major update of my router firmware (AVM FritzBox 7490) earlier this year. I’ve got a stable connection after switching off band steering.
/Edit: the drops returned, see my post below.
This is the only device with this issue in my WiFi network, all other devices are working smoothly. Assuming that band steering is an industrial standard: why does an expensive new premium phone like the XZ fail at that point? This is embarassing in my view. However, this may help other users (or leads to a firmware fix?)
@admin: I accidently chose the wrong thread, this belongs to Xperia-XZ/My-xperia-xz-wifi-dropping-issue/, because mine is a XZ, not a XZs, sorry. Please move.
@uliwooly:
result: "test passed" (my own translation). There is also a special app, including a test, from the router manufacturer. That shows no errors either, despite that the connection got cut off during the test ... completely useless.
By the way: The connection drops have returned, no matter if band steering is enabled or not.
found no solution, but a workaround:
- bought a simple WiFi repeater, that supports 2.4 GHz band only
- assigned a separate SSID to it
- deleted original SSID from Xperia
- connected to repeater.
...
waiting for a firmware bugfix.
I also have the same problem on my Xperia XZ after updating to Android 7.1 recently.
After the update, my issues are slightly different. It connect to the WiFi, but it connects to the wireless G set up not wireless N. Even if I select the network I want, after a while it reverts back to wireless G. It's really annoying and the wifi issues seem wide spread for Sony not to be doing anything about this.
I suspect the issue arised after updating to nougat?
If so try a factory reset after deleting your wifi setting and deleting your phone signature data from your router (connected devices > unassign)
Thanks for your reply. Yes, the issue has shown up after Android 7 update. But I've reset the Phone more than once, as well as
- sending the phone to Xperia Care for repair,
- completely resetting the router,
- changing WiFi channel and and athentication method (Tkip)
- changing router password,
- and several other
At least my Xperia XZ, and possibly others, have serious problems with 5 GHz WiFi, that is simply the reason. But Sony refuses to repair it. Very frustrating for a long term Sony customer like me.
Don't know if that is of any help, but my Xz premium has the exact same issues regarding WiFi drops. Every few minutes it drops me out of my 5ghz wifi at home, have tried on other routers, 2,4ghz seems fine but 5ghz is a nightmare to use. Never had any issues with my z5. Might be 7.1 since z5 had 7.0 and no problems whatsoever.
