Whatsapp notification

Can anyone please help. When i recieve a wotsapp message it appears on the lock screen but not on the app icon. ( on my text messages i normally get a number 1 or 2 depending on how many un-read messages i have.) Once i clear the notification i wouldnt know i have a message.
