Doesn't answer your question but just thought I'd recommend an app that I use and love... it's called Gesture Search and you basically draw the letter of the name that you want to find... for example 'D' that will being up all your D's so Dad, Daniel, Dave, Doug etc... if you want to narrow it down you you can put in the next and any subsequent letters. Each of the names will have a green phone handset next to it which if you press it will make the call. If you press on their name it will take you to their contact page. You can include apps, music, videos etc in the search too if you want.
