Alarm on xp mini not an alarm when phone switched off?

Hi I am completely new here and completely new to the smart phone. It's just that all my other Sony phones, the alarm worked (and calendar reminder) when the phone was switched off, to wake me up ect. Is there a way to activate this so that it will work, or does the phone have to be switched on to use this facility?

with the X10 it has to be switched on - I just leave mine in airplane mode at night so i don't get phone calls/emails etc but the alarm works in the morning

Many thanks ak3 for your answer. It sounds like the most acceptable way of using the alarm on the phone? I will give it a try. Pitty SE don't make all basic functions the same on their phones. Maybe this could be one for a future update!

As far as I know, this one isn't down to Sony, this is down to Android. Just like when you switch your computer at home off - it won't wake up for an alarm, it needs to be physically switched on
