**UX1XN Recovery Discs?**

Hello Vaio users.

So far very happy with my new UX1. Packs a lot of power. The keyboard is not as bad as reviews claimed. I must have slender fingers.

Now for the help.

I've burned the recovery discs, all 9 of them. However it has occurred to me that they may be useless. If the recovery partition is erased, how can I recover the system from an external USB drive using the cd's? I didn't think a USB drive worked in DOS mode.

I'd like to claim back the recovery partition for normal use if possible, as space is precious on the UX1's small flash drive.

The recovery guide seems to be a general manual, not taking into account the UX1's special needs, what with it lacking a CD drive.

Help would be appreciated.

Hi Backspace and welcome.

If you are using Vista it should boot from any external USB drive. You may have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS. Best idea is to try it and see if it boots into the Vaio Recovery Utility before you delete the Recovery Partition - you can always cancel.

With XP or older operating systems all Vaios will only boot from a USB 1.44MB Floppy Drive.

If it was me, I would be making a full mirror back-up with Acronis True Image to an external drive to include all the contents of your flash drive including the Recovery Partition.

Thankyou Blencogo for clearing things up. It is Vista.

I will do as you suggest.
