Clicking harddisk sound FE11S sequel

Now just like a lot of Vaio FE11S users I had the clicking sound where my hardisk is. People who suggest it is the hardisk working, please save me the trouble of telling 100 times it is not the harddisk working sound. I had enough laptops to know the difference.

DOWNLOAD CLICKING SOUND

Now what I would like to know is if there has been anyone who send his/her laptop to Sony back to let them check it out. If yes, I ofcourse would really like to know what sony told you or what you did eventually. It seems to me nobody knows the solution. I did call sony and told them everything about the problem. They said it was something wich is new to them. I gave them the club-vaio link where people posted about the same problem. This coming week I am going to send my laptop to sony, this clicking sound disturbs me a lot.

I know that there are previous threads about this Old thread about clicking sound link , but I wanted to post a sequal where people could post their experience and opinion. Please don't suggest me to open up my harddisk or laptop, and once again it is NOT the harddisk working sound.

What happens: "The hard disk makes irregularly a clicking sound which is pretty loud two. Most certainly is not a working sound. It sounds like something is hitting the plastic of the laptop or something else. When I shut down my laptop and restart the sound is gone for a while." I personally think it has something to do with the reading arm. The clicking sound appears always when the laptop is not working. It's like when the harddisk is not working it cant get into the resting position, and keep on trying. I hope sony is going to spend serious time on this problem, especially it seems to be a common problem.

Important suggestions and remarks of others:

hard drive is made by fujitsu & they have a diagnostic software tool on the fujitsu web site & when i ran it, the program said no hard drive found on laptop, i spoke to fujitsu & they said i should wait for later version of software to come out, which i will do! anyone who goes to fujitsu web site, the version i tryed is 6.40

This is the response I have received from Fujitsu regarding the issue: We connected this drive MHV2160BT to our analyser and installed Windows XP Pro, we did not hear any obvious clicking noise unless you place your ear next to the drive so it is very quiet even though this does go into sleep mode at around every 4-10 seconds (idle). I would investigate if you can further into the specifications and configurations fitting of your Sony Laptop.

That's great, guys I have an update for you.

After the problem I got with the issue about the power management in the motherboard of my FE11S I'm about to send it to the customer care again for this clicking HD problem, but the cool thing is that actually the HD is completely disconnected from the Motherboard so I can't access it and surely I will loose all the data, even if the problem is just in the connector part..I'm very angry about it.

If the sony service is really that poor I'm about to change platform, since something like that would surely will better handled by any computer shop I can find in town, but since I'm still in warranty I will just wait for a new HD, or I will change it myself when it sony will send my vaio back.

Even their workers for the customer care doesn't know anything about this stuff, I guess sony is not using our money that well.

Sorry for the harshness but I'm a graphic artist and I will loose the 90% of my projects and works with this issue, and surely make again a database of materials from the scratch will not be that easy.

I can hear a clicking noise on my FE 31H which is 2 weeks old I never noticed it before until i came across this thread. The clicking noise is constant and doesnt stop. I'm just wondering if this is normal. The noise isn't that loud but 2 weeks ago there was no noise. It could be the fan but im not sure because i don't know where the harddrive is.

Hi guys, I just posted a new thread about this "clicking" problem without even knowing that so many people where affected by this. I have a FE31Z brand new with a 200 gb disk Fujitsu MHV2200BT. I'll get my money back for the laptop (spain) but I want to know WHY! It's such a great laptop, but it's such a great deffect! Hope anyone can help, I still have confidence on the clicking noise being solved, thanks a lot!!

*** POSSIBLE FIX FOR WINDOWS VISTA ***

I too have always been haunted by the clicking sound. However, when I installed windows Vista, the clicking stopped. However, after some messing about I managed to get the clicking back (I missed it sorely). I did this by:

1) Going to device manager
2) Righit clicking on my fujitsu hard disk and selecting "Enable Advanced Performance" and keeping the "Enable write caching" box ticked.
3) Restarting my computer

After restart, the clicking was back and as bad as ever! Ergo, I conclude that the clicking is caused by the "Enable Advanced Performance" check box.

parekhd, thank you for your information.

One question...

When you unticked the advanced performante and write cache, did the clicking stop?! 🙂 Just to make sure 😉

I've bought a Vaio VGN-FE28H and i also have that annoying clicking sound - and the notebook has also the same hd, a Fujitsu MHV2160BT - and i've got the Revision 13 - is it possible that i use the Revision 14 for the FE11S or should i look for a specific revision for my notebook?

untick the second box, not the first - this is what worked for me. I don't know if this will work for anybody else. It might even be a coincidence that the clicking stopped once I unticked the box! Who knows!

The only fix that worked for me was using the Version 14 firmware posted earlier in this thread.

But i have now bought a WD Scorpio drive as a replacement, it's still only 160GB, but it's 5400 speed improves my Vista rating for hard disk from 4.1 -> 4.7
