Hi,
My XP has been stuck on a screen showing a spanner and screwdriver all night. I've tried connecting it to my PC and using PC Companion but it won't detect my device.
It did at one point switch to the ribbons of colour screen and my device was detected, it then said my phone couldn't be updated, the phone reset and went back to the spanner and screwdriver screen.
Any ideas?
try to charge your device for 1-2 hours. using wallmount adapter. ignore bootloops.
then perform software repair using Xperia Companion,
This doesn't work as my phone never gets into a state where the device is able to be recognised by my computer. I can't get through those steps anyway either as the phone doesn't respond to the pressing of any buttons, including the power button. The only way I've found to reset it is to press a pencil into the off button on the back of the phone.
Hi @GazzP,
I'm sorry to hear about your phone.
Do you see a small progress bar just on your screen? If you do, please try and connect the phone to a charger for 12-24 hours since the system is being repaired.
If you don't see any progress bar I would recommend what @nolramlb suggested, performing a software repair using Xperia Companion. It's important that you device is powered off during the entire repair process.
You should be able to power off the phone with the small OFF button that you can access if you remove the back cover of your phone.
Let us know how it goes!
Yes, there's a progress bar. It shows for about two hours, then the screen switches to the bootup screen with the coloured ribbon, like in this photo.

It repeats that over and over for a few hours, then the phone switches off, restarts and goes back to the screwdriver screen and the whole process keeps repeating.
Thanks a lot for the update and the picture!
In this case I would recommend that you perform a software repair using Xperia Companion, do note that this will delete all data on the internal storage and since you can't boot your phone and unlock it you can't backup any data.
Please let me know how it goes and I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
I can't use Xperia Companion, as I said before, my computer does not recognise that it is connected to my phone, so I can never get past the stage shown below
Hello again!
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
If you are using a PC could you please try another USB port and try performing the repair again? Or if you the option to try with another original USB cable. I fully understand if you don't have another cable at hand, but if you have a friend, colleague or family member with an Xperia device you could ask them kindly if you can borrow theirs.
Should you experience the same behaviour with another cable or USB port I would recommend trying to perform the repair on another computer.
Keep me updated!
