Then it's probably a folder that is being synchronized from the internet. Go to Settings -> Accounts & sync and check if synchronization of pictures is enabled for any account. If you look on that folder under Gallery i also suspect you have a small icon on it indicating what service it comes from.
I'm not sure what you mean by auto backup. Could you please elaborate?
Sounds like you may have installed an app that backups your pictures to another folder.
When you open a picture in the gallery you can delete it from the menu shown when you press the menu button. You can also connect the phone to a computer and delete them from there.
If you want to stop the backup creation you need to check what apps you have installed and remove the app that's doing this.
