closing background app

i used to have an option in ma phone to close the apps running in the background by pressing the home screen button for a while..... i had updated my phone a couple of days back and from then when i press the home screen button to close the backgrond apps i get the google now screen. can anyone help me know how the background apps can be closed.

my phone info is as follows:

model: LT26i

android version: 4.1.2

build num: 6.2.b.1.96.

Press and hold Home = google now

Tap Home once = take you back to the homescreen

tap it twice = task manager
