Tried with support but they couldn't replicate the issue, whenever I plug my MDR-NC31EM headphones in my phone it thinks it's a mic so no sound is played through them, at first I thought it was just the headphones themselves so I ordered a new pair but the new ones act just the same way, I don't believe it's a hardware problem since all other headphones I've tried work like they should, the problem also did occur at the same time as I updated to 4.4.4 so I'm wondering if it's a bug or something, does anybody else have the same issue?
I did a software repair as adviced by the support at Sony but that didn't work, I don't know what to do, now I'm here with 100 bucks worth of headphones I can't use!
Today, i have the same problem . Maybe a software error ...
Have same problem for about a month i think... Other headphones works tho...

Had you updated to 4.4.4 at the time this happened? It seems to be a common link.
Totally agree....many posts for same problem since the recent update, but strangely like a lot of the other reported problems it does not affect everyone
Hi, might be worth you while if you get time to trawl thru all the similiar posts to see if there was a solution but i'm fairly sure there isnt one i'm afraid.....can you use a different headset in the meantime
Hi. My xperia z2 has the same problem. It started weeks after using 4.4.4 update with no problems , then one day the MDR-NC31E started being detected as a stereo microphone. I have repaired it via pc companion, also i've reflashed 4.4.2 both without solving it.
I've also noticed that after plug in a normal pair of headphones, that by the way all of them work perfectly, and plug in again the noise cancelation ones, sometimes the phone recognises it correctly as NC but only delivering sound to the left earpice. when this happen, if i move the jack conector of the headphones making it do more pressure with the phone pins the right earpice start to work. I think that is not 4.4.4 related because in 4.4.2 it fails too even selecting the correct 5 pins accesory in options (it is detected automtically in 4.4.4 but there is a selection menu in the 4.4.2).
Some spanish forum say that its actualy a hardware problem with the jack conector of the phone.
Symptoms are: MDR NC31E detected as microphone, rarelly sometimes detected correctly but with no sound in right earpiece. Stardard headphones works without problems plugged in the phone, also MDR NC31E works perfectly in other devices (phones, pc, tv...) obviously without noise cancelation. Also working correctly in my friend Z3.
Hope this help a little. VERY BAD SONY!!
Mine is going to service under warranty because i havent been able to get a solution. this is the second time sending it to the service, first was for a vibration issue (ramdomly stopped working) it took 3 times to get it correctly fixed...let's see this one.
I have had my z2 since may running perfectly fine then all of a sudden this issue has begun i have tried pretty much everything suggested in this thread but to no avail could somebody please help me.
Hi, this problem seems to have surfaced on some phones since the 4.4.4 update.....been lots of posts on the forum, doesn't affect everyone tho which is strange
