Cover selection setting not working on XZ1

Is anyone else having trouble with the cover selection settings not working for non style cover cases (regular flip style cases)? The menu allows selection of different types of case for automatic screen on/off but in actual use they have no effect. I find this frustrating since double tap to wake is missing now. My XZ had the same issue since Oreo (was fine on Nougat). I'm on 47.1.A.12.75, have tried factory reset, haven't ran software repair yet.

Hi there, only workaround I know of seems to be using the official "style cover stand case" from Sony. I'm not sure why as there's nothing special as far as I can see and no magnetic closure, nor does it have any NFC tag that I can see. It's also more expensive being an official Sony product. On the plus side it's slim and durable. I even had this issue on the XZ since Oreo, I've no idea why though.
