When charging, why does the Orange light appear?

I connected my phone to the charger, and instead of the usual green light / battery icon showing it's charging, the orange light in the top left corner came on and there's nothing different about the battery icon - am I missing something?? I find it incredibly frustrating that I can't charge the phone when *I* want to charge it - the phone seems to have a mind of it's own when it comes to charging...

In fact, the orange light has to appear when you charge your phone. The green light appears when the phone is 95% charged. In case of battery icon there is some problem. You got to settings> About Phone and click status. Here you can see whether your phone is charging and how charging process is done (usb or AC), what is the present available charge etc. See this and make sure that the phone is charging.

I checked what the Status was when it was connected and disconnected from the charger and both times it was 'Discharging" This is the SECOND Xperia handset I've had - I've only had the phone for 3 weeks, and for the last 3 days, it has died on me, so I took it back to the store last night and the girl there swapped my previous handset over for a new one and a new battery. Still, this morning, the new handset was only 1/3 charged, so I went into the store again and the guy gave me a new charger, thinking that was the issue... and now, back home, it appears I cannot charge it. HOW FRUSTRATING!!

Did you try charging using PC? Try to charge using a pc.

Yes, it might be worth seeing if it charges through the USB socket on your PC, but it should also charge properly through a normal socket.  Are you sure that the electrical socket on your wall is working properly with other things...?  I wonder if you might have some sort of power saving extension lead or something that is causing the problem?  Unlikely, but it does seem odd that you have had the problem with two different phones.

Mine always display a green light during a charge, regardless of the percentage of power left in the battery

if mine runs flat, the LED glows red whilst the charging cycle starts, it then turns to a sort of yellowy green (which to some people could be described as orange) before turning green when it's fully charged

Same here.  I'd probably call it orange, but I'm not good with colours.

Yeah, I tried charging via USB at work yesterday - the option popped up to choose 'Charge Phone', clicked that and... nothing And my old SE charger in the same socket worked fine.

I find it frustrating that on a new handset with a new charger that this phone STILL won't charge. I checked the Status again, and still hooked up to the charger, it says 'Discharging'. Utterly ridiculous.
