Hi
Sony Ericsson insists that there is a software upgrade for my phone which says it is running 2.1 update1. The previous upgrade from 1.6 worked fine. The update always fails during preparation with the error message: "Unable to install or start phone software update components". Any suggestions please?
Regards
If you are using PC Companion for the update, try updating on another PC/Laptop. Make sure that you have the latest version of PC Companion.
You can also try SE Update Service for the updating. Here is the link, http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/softwaredownloads/detailed/updateservice/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=.... However, if still unsuccessful, try updating using SE Update Service in Safe mode with Networking. Reboot PC/Laptop, keep tapping on F8 till a Safe mode menu appears, select Safe mode with Networking and proceed with the updating procedure.
Don't forget to backup your phone memory. Good luck.

I have the same problem. I have a SE Xperia x10 mini pro, bought in January 2011. I have recently upgraded to the latest version of PC Companion on my laptop. PCC says "A phone software update is available". When I click this phrase, I get a walk-through for the upgrade. Step 1 (Start) works and I have successfully backed up my data. Step 2 (Prepare) starts preparing, with the message "preparing computer for software update" and a spinning icon that runs for a minute or two. I then get a dialog box saying "Installation Error. Unable to install or start phone software update components". I click Close, and a new box comes up saying "The update of software failed. Please try again, or consult Sony Ericsson support for assistance at: http://www.sonyericsson.com/support." I have tried again several times with the same result.
I have tried the support pages, but cannot find anything that helps. I have also tried the link recommended above, but it says this software is not available for the xperia x10. It recommends I go to the software downloads available for my phone, but no upgrade is listed there.
I don't have another computer I can use for this. As a last resort, I could see whether I can use the computers at the library for this purpose. How likely is this to solve the problem?
I haven't tried the Safe Mode approach because it indicates it's for use with the SE Update Service rather than PC companion, and SE is telling me it's not available.
Many threads indicate the SE Update Service is the solution, so I am surprised it says it is not available for the X10. I clicked on the link http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/mobilephones/downloads/subject/updateservice/xperiax10?cc=gb... and it says
Xperia X10 software downloads
Update Service
This software is not available for the X10
Go to the Software Downloads Overview to see available software for your phone.
Any other ideas besides these standard approaches? Any idea why I am getting the message that SE Update Service isn't available for the X10, and what I can do about it?
Thanks in advance.
No ideas? I guess it's off to the library for me next week, then - wish me luck!
how about update service from this link
All my problems solved, thanks for the Update Service link. Works like clockwork on my SE X10 Xperia. Welcome Gingerbread, now the fun begins! And the instructions are simple.
anytime
My new problem is I cant restore my contacts from the .sbf file I created prior to the Gingerbread upgrade. i've downloaded IO File Manager but cant get a suutable Backup and Rrestore program that I can move to the SD and read the .SBF file.
This link did work for me, and I have the download, which includes the Xperia X10 mini pro, my phone - thanks!
But (sigh) it doesn't work. Maybe my phone is cursed. Specifically, I started up the program successfully, but when it got to step 2 out of 4 (connect), it just kept cycling, telling me to keep holding down the back key of my phone and keep it plugged into the USB port. After about 30 minutes of this and having changed fingers several times, I decided this just could not be right, and gave up. I think it must have a connection problem because there was no sign of a crash, software problems, or anything else amiss. I will try again at some point.
Anyway, this is clearly the way forward, so many thanks for the successful link. I suppose I can live with not having the update, though I'm starting to find that some apps I want don't work on my phone, and I suspect I need this update to get them. I will also try rebooting everything to see if that makes any difference. I still haven't been to the library either - so there's always that as a last resort.
