SMS problems

HI All,

It appears I cannot send messages over 160 characters. Does anyone have the same problem? I am hearing things about bugs in the Andriod 2.1 update. I have tried differeent SMS products on the market such as Go SMS but I am getting the same issues.

Can anyone help?

Thanks all

That is not a bug, the 160 characters is the standard world-wide stablished limit for the SMS.

Thanks Josh. ok this is what I was told. Could you confirm if it would convert to MMS? Which I have atetmpted to set up and again still is not working.

When you are creating a SMS and if you add a picture, sound or video it will become automatically a MMS.

Doesnt make sense to me.

As I understand it text is converted to a MMS after 3 SMS (ie 480 characters). The phone itself displays SMS up to 479 characters then the display changes to MMS. I think this is an issue with 2.1 on Xperia.

I think you got it wrong there, MMS =Multimedia Messaging Service, meaning a message that not only has text but also a media file on it. Media would be Sound, video or picture. If you keep adding text to an SMS it will still be only a "text" message. Some other phones (not the X10) give you an option that after you have typed 160 characters it allows you to keep writing and divide the messages automatically into 160 characters each. But still these are going to be SMS (text messages) not MMS (picture messages as most people know them).

It is.  This point has been brought up several times here, and the reps have repeatedly refused to admit this is an issue with X10.  I had to download handcent to work around this issue.  I wish the SE-answers team would just tell us the truth, because it is so annoying to see responses like this:

When you are creating a SMS and if you add a picture, sound or video it will become automatically a MMS.

Call me crazy, but I should NOT have to add media to my text message to get it to send just because I typed over 160 characters!!!!!  That is the most asenine thing I have ever heard in my life.   Adding 161 characters to a text will automatically convert it to MMS if the messaging app is set up correctly.  Something SE dropped the ball with again.

Let me give SE a little advice here:

STOP CODING SOFTWARE BECAUSE EVERYTIME YOU DO YOU F*** IT UP.  IT WOULD BE BETTER TO SEND OUT A PHONE WITHOUT ANDROID LOADED AT ALL AND INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO FLASH A CUSTOM ROM, THAN DEAL WITH ANY MORE OF SE'S MAJOR SOFTWARE F***-UPS.  LEAVE IT TO THE DEV'S AT XDA TO DO IT CORRECTLY!!!  AT LEAST THEY CAN GET IT RIGHT.

Just to confirm because honestly i was looking for any other phone that converts automatically without any type of custom app, the 161 characters long sms to MMS, can you show me any link that say that is normal on every phone?

Ps, i downloaded the handcent app on my phone and i typed and more than 160 and what it did is separate the messages into 2 SMS messages (not MMS), since i only typed 170 characters.

handcent's default setting is to split the message.  it can be changed.
