Pictures on SD cards corrupted

Hello,

i have a very strange issue with my SD-Cards. Every picture on it appears only half rendered, or with yellow, grey, green wrong rendered pictures. It has no dependence on my picture viewer (Fstop). Pictures which i send on whatsapp are also grey, or half rendered. I only have the possibility to use the internal storage as memory.

I tried several SD-Cards, my last was a Samsung Pro Series, the first one a Sandisk Ultra. The issue still exist.

So what could be wrong here?

Regards

Hey Sze,

Thanks for taking time to write back; it's bad that Support can sometimes be so annoying and yet we have an actual problem! I bought mine one week agio and unfortunately I am leaving the country so even if I toolk it in, not sure they will be able to help me.

Mine also went further than the pictures when uploading to social media; I use TIDAL music App and when I save files for offline use later (of course in the SD card), I get the album art going all funny and the colour gets messed up. I cannot tell you how many times I have re-installed the music app thinking the error was from there.

At least now we know we have "broken" phones and we have to live with them. Maybe if we SPAM Sony on Social Media, they will try and fix it with a software patch. I'll make a point to raise this on all their social media links everyday until its resolved as it seems to me like a software issue (as images are fine when in Internal Storage), but I could be wrong and we need new phones.

Thank you again.

Unfortunately i can not live with this Phone/this issue. Especially not, when its my first time i invested about 700€ in a Smartphone which seems not to be able to handle the SD-Card, but my cheaper z5c does...

To be honest, i really didn't thought that Sony-support will find the error. Its to special. You need some time to run into this issue. The on-stock Sony Picture-viewer seems to work fine with the SD-Card....at a first glace. But anyway, corrupted JPGs appear. Just very seldom.

Of course i started to arrange me with this bug, and used LeafPic, or Quickpic instead of Fstop. Till i realised, that i even cant send pictures (which are stored on the SD) with my messaging apps (Threema, Telegramm, Facebook). This simply cannot be.

Conclusion: There is a bug in the way how the XZ handles the SD-Card. Cause i dont have this issues, when i store everything on the internal memory and the files themselves are also not corrupt!

And what about the Read/Write performance of the SD? How is this possible that my z5c is in every benchmark faster than the XZ? It seems to be, that the z5c is more premium than the xz.

I will keep you updated.

I get today my phone back. Nothing is resolved. I have send a few pictures with threema (like whatsapp), see whats happend:

The first one and the last one are the same pictures. And my picture viewer shows very interesting constellations.

Sony tells me that the phone functions are fully in compliance with the specifications of the manufacturer. Okay....

I also benchmarked my Smartphones with the new Samsung Pro SD-Card:

z5c:

Read: 39MB/s

Write: 38MB/s

encrypted:

Read: 29MB/s

Write: 25MB/s

XZ:

Read: 30MB/s

Write: 29MB/s

encrypted:

Read: 19MB/s

Write: 18MB/s

I noticed, that this picture issue happens very seldom on an not encrypted SD-Card. If i encrypt, i run permanently into this issue.

I contacted my reseller. They will replace the Phone.

So i will keep you updated.

Its completly random, i can swipe forward and again backward, tadaaa the picture shows correctly, but the next one will 100% shown as corrupt.

If that is what you observe (i.e. sometimes the same picture is shown correctly, sometimes incorrectly), it means that the pictures are stored on the SD card properly, not corrupted. There's nothing wrong with the SD card itself or data stored on the card.
The problem is in the phone hardware/software that reads the data from the card. Quite possibly it is the decryption algoritm that contains a bug.

I would agree with your idea of contacting the seller, I think it may have been something with your phone as none of my photos show these artifacts.
Good luck with your replacement.

Hello,

Seems that Sony is keeping quiet on this issue. So far, no software patch to fix it.

Anyone having any luck with it?

Hello Blade,

i am still waiting for my "new" XZ.

Meanwhile i recieved several benchmarks from other users. Its seems to be very clear, that the XZ uses a crappy SD-Card reader. So even the problem with the pictures will be solved, you should not encrypt your sd-card. Otherwise you will run into performance issues.

My reseller told me today that the new XZ is on the way. I will keep you informed.

haha, okay, lets go one step back.

just talked to my reseller.....they had also no luck with the Sony RMA. The performed "Sony repair center quick check" has proven that everything is allright. Once again, i will get my old phone back.

No chance to get a refund or another phone. Seems to be, that i flushed 700€ down the toilet.

I mean, its okay that Sony decided to build crappy hardware into their phones and sell it for 700€, but it should work. And if not, the support should work. But it doesnt.

So thats the "Sony Xperience" the advertisements are talking about. I am done with it.

Just an update on this.

Just installed the Android 7 update and this issue "seems" to have gone now. I did the upgrade this morning and all the oictures i have uploaded seem to be OK. I'm optimistic that the issue has been fixed (I wonder how as it seemed to be a hardware issue), but I'll be happy if it stays like this.

Perfomance seems slightly slower to read the card but not too bad.
