Seem to be having a few teething problems with the new toy.....
The XL302 is connected to 32V2500 via HDMI. Plays back audio cd's via the tv speakes no problem. Try putting a DVD in or a blu ray disc and you get a nice pictre but no sound....there's continuity in that there's no film audio in Win DVD BD, windows media player and real player!
So thought must be a sound card setting....and checked the following:
In control panel -> Sounds -> digital output device (S/PDIF & HDMI)is selected (green tick). In Output channel the digital output selection is selected for hdmi and s/pdif. The test function in advanced gives a tone. Going back to the general tab the jack information says rear panel optical jack. In the levels tab it only has the digital output device (SPDIF). Tried selecting hdmi only in the output channel but the rear panel optical jack remains in general tab and SPDIF stays in levels tab.
ho hummm
Next thing I tried was looking in the win dvd program. In set up -> Audio -> audio output configuration...the 'digital (SPDIF) out to external processor is ticked. This section is greyed out so I can't change it to HDMI.
It feels like the units fooled itself into thinking I'm using the SPDIF port even when I'm telling it I'm not and no connection has ever been made to it!
Any ideas would be much appreciated...
Hi Lucas , yuor machine was back??? Hope you have found solve the problem with audio, really!
Icheck on winblue dvd on audio configuartion is not possible to select the output only the s/pdif and not avilable the hdmi!!! Can be then problem on soft of intervideo? In case in wich way we can solve?
Yes its incredible that SONY dont take care what they sold out!
Seams they dont be able to solve and they are out ofm control...incredible but that's the true. Thanks all ciao
The XL302 is back with me. Progress.....I now get to hear the sound from these new fangled talking motion pictures!
In the absence of a fault report (only requested 3 times) I'll try to say what has been changed. It is clear the original software for the sigmatel sound card has been altered while the unit was back with sony. Where I previously had a choice of setting audio output channel via the....ahem...'output channel' tab this no longer exists. In the general and levels tab the "Digital Output Device (S/PDIF)" is shown. No facility anywhere in playback devices allows me to choose a different output channel.
However this works with HDMI as well as the 5.1 speaker system I have connected through the SPDIF (Toslink). Turn off the 5.1 speaker amp/receiver/decoder thing and the sound quite happily comes through the sony bravia speakers.
They've left a program on me desktop called 'STDAUD-01487700-UN'. Publisher is given as Sony but the technician didn't think to leave a read me file. The sigmatel driver i now have on the unit is version 6.10.5379.0. Perhaps the 'STDAUD-01487700-UN' was the original software that errr didn't work. who knows it could even be the new stuff!??
Anyroad upshot is that the unit works though there appears to still be glitches with blu-ray. It does have problem with the new software when DTS audio and/or dolby digital boxes are ticked in the 'supported formats' tab. If I do have these boxes ticked then no audio from blu ray but I do ger audio from DVD. One other thing I found on the 2nd blu ray disc I've tried since the fix was sound deteriation down to a level similar to that of a DAB radio trying to pick up a weak signal (i.e unintelligible). Pause the picture for a few seconds and then play and sound returns back to normal. Not sure if this was a one off with that disc or another interesting feature of blu-ray on the xl302
I suppose I'd better attempt to balance my experience. Audio problems aside I've now started playing around with other features of the machine and it is good. I would buy a variant of the machine given me time again. However (Dackner) I'd save the pennies and not get the blu ray version. After all the price will drop significantly for an add on HD drive and I'd wager blu ray will lose the high definition format tussle. Be also nice if they had a version with XP for those who don't have the patience for vista and 3rd party drivers to fix their inevitable host of early life problems.
While sony have seemingly sorted it out for me they are a royal pain in the arse to deal with. A story of missed call backs (at times and dates suggested by them!), misinformation and constant pushing on my part. I essentially got stone walled when I suggested a fault report would be most welcome. I do feel for the chaps in Irish support office (having lost me dummy a couple of times!) but it is clear that their customer interface needs a drastic overhaul.
I hope some of this has been useful to others experiencing problems.

Hey nicola....Did you try adjusting the soundcard settings as described previously? If you have and you still get no audio then just keep plugging away at sony support. Don't take no for an answer or accept advice you've tried and know not to work. Escalate it yourself, demand to talk directly to an engineer (they all seem to work out of brussels). I also complained to a customer (dis) service manager and that seemed to get the ball rolling for me.
All the best....Luca
