XL 302 - audio from CD but not DVD or BD!

Seem to be having a few teething problems with the new toy.....

The XL302 is connected to 32V2500 via HDMI. Plays back audio cd's via the tv speakes no problem. Try putting a DVD in or a blu ray disc and you get a nice pictre but no sound....there's continuity in that there's no film audio in Win DVD BD, windows media player and real player!

So thought must be a sound card setting....and checked the following:

In control panel -> Sounds -> digital output device (S/PDIF & HDMI)is selected (green tick). In Output channel the digital output selection is selected for hdmi and s/pdif. The test function in advanced gives a tone. Going back to the general tab the jack information says rear panel optical jack. In the levels tab it only has the digital output device (SPDIF). Tried selecting hdmi only in the output channel but the rear panel optical jack remains in general tab and SPDIF stays in levels tab.

ho hummm

Next thing I tried was looking in the win dvd program. In set up -> Audio -> audio output configuration...the 'digital (SPDIF) out to external processor is ticked. This section is greyed out so I can't change it to HDMI.

It feels like the units fooled itself into thinking I'm using the SPDIF port even when I'm telling it I'm not and no connection has ever been made to it!

Any ideas would be much appreciated...

hello Simon

I thought it was only me who had the problem!

Is it just the blu ray discs you're not getting audio from when using the windvd software?

I've been in phone contact with sony support. Spoken to a couple of different chaps and they say they've never come across this problem before. They tell me they've recreated my set up and cannot replicate the problem.

I've also recently tried connecting through the spdif/optical port with a new speaker/amp set. Still no joy. Unistalling reinstalling software/drivers doen't work for me. Tried the headphones jack in the XL302 as well. I'll have another go with sony's call centre> Will let you know if it gets sorted.

Hi Guys, same here. I have the 301, I can get all other sound TV music but no sound from DVD through HDMI. I can get it through my Rotel processor via SPDIF but can't understand why it wont work through HDMI. Funny thing is I'm sure it use to.

Hey Sturge, I'm starting to feel just like that goldfish you got there.

According to Sony you could try unticking the DTS check box in the soundcard playback devices (doesn't work for me though). I've had a fair few calls to Sony support and they haven't offered a glimmer of a solution to solve the problem. The extent of their help is to tell me to go through the same soundcard loops I've done plenty of times. They say you get to see how good a company is when you have a problem........

Hi Lucaf8,

At one time every thing I had was Sony, if it was in my house it had to start with an S. But over the years, Sony's attitude to their customers has seen me go back to Pioneer as my electrical suppler of choice.
Having said that, I have 3 Vaio's and this is the first dissapointment. Sony's contempt for their customers will see them go further down the ladder untill there are no rungs left.

Good Luck with Sony tec, your need it...........

Well a couple of months on for me with this issue and Sony have got as far as taking the unit back to look at it themselves. Their tech support contacted me first to say it was a problem with Vista and then to say there's no real problem at all!

I was told unchecking the DTS/dolby boxes in the sound card's playback devices along with selecting playback through 'HDMI only' worked on their test bench.....I found this fair funny as I'd been through these loops many many times meself.

Well Nik its no doubt worth a go if you've not tried these loops. Sony are adamant that the 'no audio issue' is corrected by having the DTS/Dolby boxes unticked and nominating the audio output through either HDMI or SPDIF (not HDMI+SPDIF together)

They've had my unit for a couple of weeks. Be nice if they returned it working!

Well Lucaf, PLEASE do tell us what happens, since the XL 302 is not exactly a cheap machine! (and I thought it would solve all my media wants and wishes...)

Well lucaf8,

I suppose you could count yourself lucky that they are having a look at it for you, we will all just have to wait and see if they find a solution for you. Bit of a pain having to take it all out of your system. I still find it hard to believe that a company as big as Sony don't carry out beta testing of it's products befor releasing it on the general public....
