Wireless connection won't go above 54mbps

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB4C5E, and with some research I've worked out that the built in wireless atheros wireless card can use n protocols and supports upto 150mbps transfer speed.  I'm using a BT homehub 3 with infinity, which is currently set at 40mbps but due to increase upto 100mbps within the next 12 months.

I recently had the BT engineer out who checked all my kit and using his laptop, was getting internet speed of 37mbps via the wireless and checking his connection to the router, it was at 150mbps.  My vaio is stuck at 54mbps and the maximum internet I can get is around 11mbps.

Also when I check the radio type on the wireless connection, it says it's 802.11g.. not n.

Is this a known issue with the laptop?  And is there anything I need to do to get the full 150mbps connectivity?  As my main concern is that I will not be able to use the full broadband speed wirelessly when it eventually comes.

Thanks for your help!
