VGC-V2M Upgrade

Ah, it seems like only yesterday I was going "Oooh" and "Ahhh" over my brand new V2M! [:">] But now the time has come to start thinking of getting a little more out of the ol' boy. So, I was thinking of upgrading the processor to a Core 2 Duo. Is it possible? Has anyone done it? Also I wanted to upgrade the ram, as it's still at the factory 512. Anyone know how much more I can bung in and where it goes? More to the point, how the heck do I get into the machine? I sent it back to John Lewis, who sent it to "a Sony approved repair company", about this time last year and their engineers didn't even know how to get in!

Any advice as to what can be upgraded would be appreciated!

Cheers all,
Ex

Thanks Dave, that's really good to know! I haven't had the cash to get the memory upgrade yet, but at least now I don't have to worry about it not working.

I've found Vista to be OK; but then I don't program. I do use Photoshop and, until I get the memory sorted, it's just not happening on Vista. Other programs I use are fine. No problem with the TV tuner, but then I don't use it. I only use the AV for Sky and that's alright. Only proplems with the TV side of things is that it won't work unless I change the resolution. Don't understand that one. And that, when it DOES work, it's all distorted down the right-hand side, which is very odd.

I'm debating on going back to XP, but I've spent ages getting Vista to run more or less properly and I'm reluctant to chuck all that work away!

Would be nice if Sony actually supported their products, but there you go...

Well, Vista nice and shiny, but I'm just not convinced that it's 100% working yet. I also use Photoshop and with the 2Gb Ram it works a treat!! The inbuilt "ANALOGUE!" tuner works fine with the resolution of 1280x768 here, just weird why your's keeps asking to change resolution. I'm not using the inbuilt tuner, as I've purchased a Digital Terrestrial TV Tuner and I've also got Sky going through the UHF socket, it's viewable, but I'd like to get it through the RCA sockets, but at the moment, the Sky box is one end of the room, and my PC is the other
I'm staying with my VGC-V2M as I payed over the odds for it (£1800!! OUCH!).

Ouch indeed! Hope you got a good warranty for that!

I have to admit, I have been thinking strongly of going back to XP. It's just little things like I can't just click inside a window and it tells me in the nav pane how much space I've got left. Now I have to go through the rigmarole of left-click, properties etc, etc! I know it's not a BIG thing, but it's annoying when you just want to know!

And I KNOW that Vista's really just bells and whistles, but I like the bells and whistles! I have Vista Transformation Pack on my old laptop that won't accept Vista proper, and it's looking better as each new version comes out. AND it doesn't hog memory. But, I've got Vista (preinstalled) on my new laptop and it runs really well, so I'm trying to stick with it on the V2M. I'll see how it goes when I can afford the memory upgrade.

I can't work the tuner thing out. I actually haven't had the time to look into it yet. If I can't get it to work properly then that'll be the nail in Vista's coffin!
