The dangers of VIAO Update

My VAIO update icon has been in the taskbar for a while and I finally worked out what to do with it. It took me to a page of updates, with a mixture of those that would be automatically installed and those that needed manual installation. The files were surprisingly big so I just went with the 5 options that would be installed automatically as I presumed these were all bonafide or Sony wouldn't put them up in this way.

After all of it I found I'd had the Google desktop installed on my machine, live messenger and Outlook had stopped working and the Internet had dropped to about a hundredth of its normal speed.

After several hours of uninstalling and system restore the only way to get back up to speed was to get rid of everything there that had been put on.

You have been warned!

A plea to Sony - please put a description of what these updates are and why they're needed (or not) on the site next to them (and in plain English, not opaque jargon). Even better, please make sure they work. And why on Earth does VAIO support open IE and not the preferred browser? Many thanks...

Hi Mano,
I have had the same experience with updates just as you say, it took ages to download them, they werent explained properly if I needed them or not!! as I am not a computer genius, I wasnt sure if i needed them or not!
Anyhow, Google also showed in my taskbar, and computer did seem to be slower, but I will watch over the next few weeks to see if any other things happen, if so i will restore computer back before I did downloads.
Thanks. :slight_frown:
