Hi deftoneuk,

This is a fairly old machine so you should not expect blistering performance especially with a Pentium M processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 GPU.

After the fresh install of XP (assuming that this was not using the recovery disks) have you installed all Sony Drivers and utilities?

The Vaio update 5 failing to install is an ongoing problem and is not limited to this model.

This model has a 1.5 Ghz processer – how much under this speed is it reported as running?

How much memory is installed? You may find that it is only 512MB. This model can support up to 2GB (1GB per slot) – you may achieve a performance increase by adding additional memory.

Besides hardware issues "rich912" memtioned, there are many other issues you can check and fix. Whether you are suffering lack of free disk space, registry corruption, overload startup programs, too many useless junks/temporary files, browser caches & errors, system activity traces etc. The fact is, you should keep some system maintenance job regularly. Try:

  • Remove unwanted programs.
  • Delete this junk or useless files.
  • Defragment your system.
  • Disable automatic startup programs.
  • Fix related registry errors.

Hi myheaven and thank you for your suggestions.

Valid as these may usually be, deftoneuk has just carried out a full, clean install of the Operating System which should have fixed most of these issues.

Thanks again for posting.
