Processor Upgrade

Hi,

I have a vgn-sz1m/b with a core duo processor. I have noticed that the newer sz4 series has the same mobo, but a T7xx core 2 duo processor.

Does this mean I could upgrade my old SZ to a T7300 2.0ghz processor??

It should be technically possible as they both use the Processor Socket M.

I don't know of anyone who has tried it as there isn't a massive advantage unless you must have 64-bit.

The bus speed on the newer T7300 is higher than that of the older ones so it will either not work (because it is not supported) or it will only work at the bus speed capable by your motherboard.

This really means that there would be little advantage as the processor could not be used to its full potential.

What processor does it already have?

I'm unsure of the exact model number, but its a 1.66ghz Core Duo.

According to the spec here the processor that you describe has a 677MHz FSB which means that you can easily swap it for any of the Core2Duo processors that have an even second number.

I would suggest the T7200 which is the 2GHz model. (The T7300 has an 800MHz FSB which would be a pointless waste of money)

Good news

What kind of performance increases could I expect for gaming (Counter-Strike Source, HL2 etc. mainly Source engine stuff), Photoshop and so forth?

Well it would improve it to a point. The thing it will improve most is battery life (very clever processor and an improvement on the one you already own).

It will give you a big boost in multitasking. Are you using XP or Vista?

Currently on XP, but considering switching to Vista.

I'm a student, so i cant afford Vista and a new processor. Hence, the new processor would be running on XP.

On XP you would certainly see a decent improvement especially in photo processing in photoshop but not necessarily in the games as the graphic card takes the burden of all the complicated processing and you can't replace that.

To speed up the games you may consider newer graphics drivers from laptopvideo2go.com

Hi Evil_Eye

The Vaio owner in this thread changed the CPU in an AR21M from an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5600 to a Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200..
