Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection

First of all, Im thinking that getting a Sony was the worse thing I could have done in a million years. I mean Ive been trying to get in contact with someone that will hopefully shed some light on this boring and stupid problem and after calling 4 of 5 different support numbers, registering in 3 different parts of the bloody user-UNfriendly website, waiting for over half an hour for my information to be inserted into the database, calling again a few different numbers can you guess what happens? Im not recognised by the system, "please register and call again". Why on earth must I register to get support for something I bought in the first place? What if my bloody internet is not working and I am without a phone or simply do not want to pay nearly 50p per minute to hear a machine talking to me and telling me I am not registered?

Anyway, now that I got that load off my chest, lets get to the problem:

My computer comes with a Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection that is giving me serious problems when I try to access the internet. My connection is sluggish and most of the times it actually disconnects. Ive searched the web (http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-006205.htm) and found that, according to Intel, the PSP (Power Save Polling) function is causing the problem. Ive followed their instructions on how to disable the PSP but the problem still keeps happening.

Please do not make me believe that the problem lies with the router as there are 3 other computers connected to the same router through wireless and none have any problems whatsoever. Also please do not ask me the brand of the router, model, etc etc because I know the problem is not there. I could provide you with dozens of links for people with all different sorts of routers, modems, even different computers from different brands that all have the same wireless connection hardware and having the same problem as me.

Furthermore, both the router and the computer have the most up-to-date firmware and drivers. Also I have tried a different variety of drivers with no success.

I would gladly post this on Intels website but they say is down to the OEM.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Steve and welcome.

Difficult to get to the bottom of these wireless problems - I presume you are using the latest driver -

Intel® PRO/Wireless Drivers-Only for Windows* XP [V11.1.1.0_XP_DRIVERS.ZIP]

Have you increased the performance to MAX in the wireless adapter Power Management setting?

These two usually fix the problem but not for everyone.

Hi Blencogo, thx for your reply. I have the most up-to-date drivers (downloaded yesterday from Intels website), also tried the drivers that Sony suggests for my model on their website, set PSP to maximum, even went as far as trying protocol 802.11b and trying 802.11g instead of setting it to both (which is default) since some people said that made a difference as well. Disabling the PSP did some improvements but its still far far from perfect or even acceptable.

Hi littlebucko, thx for reply as well. This router is a belkin wireless G+, certainly not as old as that and far from being a bad router. Sure a N1 is always superior but not only does that cost around 70 quid, I also find it unnaceptable that if I want internet on my laptop, which is not as new as that btw (VGN FS195VP), I need to buy a new router. Specially when everyone else in this house seems to be able to connect to the router and to the internet without any problems.

Dont think I dont appreciate your replies though, and I am aware that this is not exactly the place where Sonys technicians will help you, though because of all their stupid measures to allow only registered people to contact them, Ive registered 3 times and am still unable to contact them. Thing is... there has to a be a way to get this to work that does not involve wasting money...

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Not sure if your aware but posting bump it's considered rude..

In the meantime I've asked Vaio-Link to look into your registration problems..

How old is your Vaio? It must be well over 12 months old.

I wonder if your VGN-FS195VP is now well out of warranty - I don't know if this will affect registration.

@Thalamus, had no idea about the bump, its normally accepted in many forums. Thank you for asking vaio-link why my registration process is taking so long. With all this confusion created I now have 2 accounts, this being one of them. With this one I can do nothing but access the forum. With the other one I can login to the e-support area but I cant open a new case because it tells me I have to register. Once I enter the 15 digit code it tells me that code is invalid. I wonder if he reckons its already being used by this account. I know that the key is valid because if I go to the drivers part and try to find out my model using the key (which I did before) it will tell me the right model.

Heya, my brother was the original buyer, I bought it from him. Id say its about 2 years old.

Today I tried reseting the router to factory defaults and setting it up again to see if it made any different but the same problem still remains. I then took a USB wireless connector from another of the computers in the house and installed it in my computer, uninstalled the Intel drivers and tried to connect to the internet using the USB connector. Been running for over 30 minutes straight and so far ping www.google.com -t shows not even 1 single timeout.

The problem is definitely with the Intel network card..

Did your brother register in his name?

My father has a Belken G+ router and I have the same wireless card and it works perfectly. You have a fault in your wireless card but try disabling and re enabling it sometimes kick starts the card in the device manager.
