PCG F270k problems

Wish I had not started with laptops after my success with my own I am now being asked to look at a friends,it was showimg as "no operating system found, so I thought that is an easy fix ,just install another hard drive ,reformat then reinstall win98.How wrong could I be, managed to instal win 98 but then it says "found new hardware etc, then crashes. The hardware in question is smcc irc infared adaptor this just pings it out to a black screen,and don't know how to get any further with it,he has no discss what so everhaving done the same as me and bought it off someone,any help sorting this out would be much appreciated by both of us,then again maybe not from me as I will probanly be lumbered again with someone else,s problem.

These seem to be the sum total downloads for the F270 Vaio. Have you installed these?
