HELP!! VAIO BUILT IN SPEAKERS - NOT SO GOOD??!

Hi! I have a VGN-BX41VN running Vista Business. I am astonished at the quality of sound from the built in speakers for Quicktime playback/WMA etc. Does anyone have any ideas how to improve the quality of sound repro? I've tried via Control panel - nothing made that much of a difference. I can't use Skype (skype calls sound as if they are being made with a tin can and string, I can no longer use Skype via the speakers), I can't watch adverts/presentations via the web as the vocal part is muffled and drowned out by the musical soundtrack. I can't believe this is normal for a Vaio - is it? I'd really appreciate some feedback, I'm really hoping there is an easy fix for this. If I turn the volume up the Windows noises are deafening, yet the Quicktime/WMA are still unbalanced and offer no quality reproduction.
