Help unable to start VGC-VA1

On boot up I get as far as the pentium logo and the message "we apologise for the inconvenience ,but windows did not start successfully" comes up. When I try any of the options they start initially but then stop and a black screen appears. Even starting in safe mode the multi list appears and freezes. What do I do now?
Desperate.

Hi jeddee and welcome.

Sounds like your boot sector or windows itself has become corrupt. Your hard drive may have failed.

You have two basic ways forward if all the choices in the startup options screen fail (I presume you have tried "Last Known Good Configuration"?)

1. Borrow a XP Pro disc from a friend and boot up with the disc in your drive. Follow the prompts to load the basic Windows Startup files. At the 'Welcome to Setup' screen press R to start the Recovery Console. Make sure you type in the NUMBER of your Windows installation (usually 1 and Enter). Type in an Administrator password. In the Recovery Console run Chkdsk and then fixboot.

2. Recover your Drive C: to factory settings by tapping F10 on booting when you see the first Vaio logo. Choose to restore Drive C: only to keep your data on drive D:. If you use this option, your drive C: will be restored to factory condition and you will lose all programs and updates installed since you bought the Vaio - these will have to be reinstalled.

Good Luck
