Hi
Right, i want to replace my HD for a much bigger one and was wondering what type of hard drive i would need to buy. SATA or something like that? Is there any limit to the size of HD that my notebook can handle.
What speed should i be looking out for?
My notebook is a VGN-FS515E
Once installed, can i use my recovery disks to re-install windows etc?
Any help would be much appreciated..
Hi fergadeth,
Your FS-Vaio will take any ATA 2.5 inch hard drive. You need an IDE Drive so get a ATA-100 drive. A SATA drive will NOT fit. I would buy one with at least 5,400 RPM spindle speed.
Something like this Seagate Momentus 160GB ATA Drive will do but also look at other makes like Hitachi Travelstar.
Although you can reload your system from the Recovery Discs, this will take it back to factory settings and you will have to reload all settings, programs, Vaio Updates, Microsoft Updates, data etc. - quite a long job!
You may like to look at ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE 10 and a 2.5 inch External Drive Caddy. Put the new drive in the Caddy and use Acronis to copy your entire hard drive to the new drive including all settings, data, programs, updates etc.
