hard disc space

I have a sony vaio vgncr21 with a 160gb hard disc. If i do a properties check of drive c it shows 40gb free of 140. Im assuming that 20gb is hidden for the recovery disc. now if i do a properties check of all folders on drive c including hidden folders it comes to 78gb. so if i have 78gb of data plus the 40 free i make that 118. but if my hard disc is 140gb wheres the other 22gb gone ? anyone any ideas ??

also due to a mishap i have damaged the top cover (ie the coloured lid with large silver vaio on it) any one know how much or wheree I can get a new one ?

I think that System Restore may be the reason..
