Now just like a lot of Vaio FE11S users I had the clicking sound where my hardisk is. People who suggest it is the hardisk working, please save me the trouble of telling 100 times it is not the harddisk working sound. I had enough laptops to know the difference.
DOWNLOAD CLICKING SOUND
Now what I would like to know is if there has been anyone who send his/her laptop to Sony back to let them check it out. If yes, I ofcourse would really like to know what sony told you or what you did eventually. It seems to me nobody knows the solution. I did call sony and told them everything about the problem. They said it was something wich is new to them. I gave them the club-vaio link where people posted about the same problem. This coming week I am going to send my laptop to sony, this clicking sound disturbs me a lot.
I know that there are previous threads about this Old thread about clicking sound link , but I wanted to post a sequal where people could post their experience and opinion. Please don't suggest me to open up my harddisk or laptop, and once again it is NOT the harddisk working sound.
What happens: "The hard disk makes irregularly a clicking sound which is pretty loud two. Most certainly is not a working sound. It sounds like something is hitting the plastic of the laptop or something else. When I shut down my laptop and restart the sound is gone for a while." I personally think it has something to do with the reading arm. The clicking sound appears always when the laptop is not working. It's like when the harddisk is not working it cant get into the resting position, and keep on trying. I hope sony is going to spend serious time on this problem, especially it seems to be a common problem.
Important suggestions and remarks of others:
hard drive is made by fujitsu & they have a diagnostic software tool on the fujitsu web site & when i ran it, the program said no hard drive found on laptop, i spoke to fujitsu & they said i should wait for later version of software to come out, which i will do! anyone who goes to fujitsu web site, the version i tryed is 6.40
This is the response I have received from Fujitsu regarding the issue: We connected this drive MHV2160BT to our analyser and installed Windows XP Pro, we did not hear any obvious clicking noise unless you place your ear next to the drive so it is very quiet even though this does go into sleep mode at around every 4-10 seconds (idle). I would investigate if you can further into the specifications and configurations fitting of your Sony Laptop.
yeah you're right about the Sony service. Pretty good.
except they did forget to replace my letter 'D' key as it is fading off. But they said they'll send that in the post to me.
On the clicking sound, nothing to report yet.
alright, still no clickity click noises.
the big test will be the wknd....cause still haven't had a chance to use it much.
No clicks, just usual hard disk activity.
But come to think of it, this testing could take longer since when i first got my vaio it took 1 month for the sounds to show up.
That is exactly the noise my FE11S has been making, but I would be very very suspicious about it being fixed already!
The first night I had my laptop it was making that noise and I restarted it (thats was around the begining of March) and it started again last week on Thursday (May) so - there were 2 months between the noise happening which would mean it could still be a problem.
What I want to know is how serious is the clicking sound? Is it a serious fault or is it just an annoying click? Will the laptop pack out if I leave it making that noise or will it be fine?
And any further developments?
Spinstorm I advice you to send your laptop to Sony and let them fix the problem. According to Sony the problem is the connector between the harddisk and the motherboard. Don't forget they format your whole drive....make a backup with norton Ghost.....
They fixed my problem and I never heard the click since I got it back.
Good luck
But if there is no damage or danger to the laptop then for a bit of clikcing every two months I can live with that for the time being as I am using the laptop alot - however if it is a serious problem that could mean the hard drive becomes damaged then I would send it back right away.
So what kind of a problem is it? annoying or serious?
And as I said I hope they have fixed it for you but I would only be convinced if you get to August and have not heard it! I have my laptop on all day EVERY day and I have only heard that sound 2 months apart!
Well by the sound of mine, which was similar to Carelinos. It was clicking every 15 secs or so.
I think on that amount of reccurences that the HD arm sounds like it could be doing damage. (sounds like it's being reset all the time, like a scratched CD player trying to find the track).
It was definitely annoying, and perhaps serious as the HD manufacturer have acknowledged the problem, as well as Sony, and a board member said that they are retracting the product.
I got the exactly the same "clicking harddisk sound" with my FE11S. It happened 3 or 4 times in the last 3 months. Yes, it may appear rarely but you cannot overlook the fact that this is an abnormal situation for a "just-bought-it" laptop. I am seriously thinking of sending it to Sony too.The problem is that clicking may not appear at all while the laptop is in Sony Service and make them charge you because of that. I think that I will send it and see what happens...
Hey Werve,
You don't need to worry about that or the £107 charge. They've acknowledged the problem.
so send at will!
