Just purchased an FZ Vaio with a blu-ray burner. using Click to DVD BD I burnt a BDMV formatted BD-R with some home video on it.
It plays fine on my Vaio but the PS3 just gives me a blank screen.
There is a rumour that the latest PS3 updates have stopped BDMV playback from BD-R's.
Anyone know more?
PS I'm using Verbatim media.
Hi there
Sadly I don't have a pS3 yet, but yes it may well be an effort to prevent piracy.
(Not in your case)
Hi 7hil,
Yes, I had heard that rumour and certainly the latest Sony BD Players have had BD-R BDMV disabled. I had also heard that a firmware update may retrospectively remove this facility to play BDMV from the earlier enabled batch of PS3s. I think you will have to ask Sony for absolute confirmation.
It's good old DRM rearing its ugly head again. Because advanced content that you create legally (Interactive with Menus) cannot be distinguished from advanced content illegally ripped, (both are BDMV file structures) the only simple fix to prevent widespread piracy is probably to simply disable playback. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, depending on your point of view) it is too late to stop BDMV authoring, that cat is already out of the bag, so stopping playback is the only quick fix.
I must admit this is only rumour - I don't know for sure - but it would explain your situation.
BDAV recording and playback of your own movies will be OK and not affected by this but once more the normal user trying to make his own interactive menus on his own camcordered content has to suffer. I'm not blaming Sony - the fault is with the pirates - but it worries me that this may well be a disadvantage of Blu-Ray against HD-DVD.

Yes I've heard this and feel quite angry about it.
I've spent all this money on a Blu-ray laptop to find the BD-R's that it produuces unusuable, unless, as you say, I create a basic BDAV disc. I can't seem to find a definitive yes or no from Sony though as to whther the BDMV discs are not playing due to them being disabled or whether it's actually a software problem.
I'll log it as a repair issue and see what happens.
