Belkin WLAN with VAIO Vista

So, here's what I have:
-- Vaio VGN-A190 which is dying, running Windows XP. The thing is getting really unstable so i gave up using it as a laptop and it is effectively "the desktop" here.
-- Belkin F5D8231-4 wireless router
-- Vaio VGN-SZ4XWN/C, running Vista. Call it "the laptop".
After some difficulties, i finally get the WLAN set up and running (the Belkin wizard didn't work so i was talked through by the support people), and could see the WLAN from laptop. But so could the rest of the world. So Belkin got me to fiddle around with some security keys. Now no one can get in my WLAN, not even my laptop. Belkin was in a hurry to dis-support me, and said this was because there was a problem with my computer/Vista (yeah yeah) and that Sony must have a patch or something so that my computer can work with them. Can't see anything on the site. Anyone know anything about this???
By the way, i tried a cable connection to the router too, and couldn't see anything, but this could just be proof that i'm an idiot.

When I bought a Belkin wireless router I connected to it straight away with no encryption but when I enabled WPA2 I couldn't connect to it at all. Eventually after inputing the key several times I gave up and deleted the connection from my computer. I double clicked on the router in the Wireless Networks window and it asked me for the key and as soon as I entered it I was connected. So my advice is delete the connection on your computer and try setting it up from scratch.

Hmm I would reset the router completly, you'll find the instructions in the manual, as I'm not ofee with Belkin routers.

I know it's a bazar to re-enter all the details but it sounds to me like it's been mis-configured as it should at least work with WEP without fail.

Thanks jumbles... well i tried that and it picked up the WLAN again ok but it i seem to be stuck in a situation where i can access the internet via the router, but i cannot see the other computer ie not really a LAN... i've tried mucking around with permissioning etc, but that seems to be all ok. the reason why i'm thinking it might not just be me being stupid is that i get an error message when i test teh connection from the wireless computer, saying "cannot communicate with DNS server... network diagnostics pinged eth the remote host but did not get a response". now i have spent way too much time on eth phone to belkin in the meantime, and they basically totally swerve the issue and blame everyone else (my mother will be next.) the last "help" they gave me was to direct me to some microsoft support piece. but that only covered XP networks, and it is Belkin that is telling me that THEY do not support Vaio / Vista because SOny needs to sort its act out (or something like that.) bottom line, i AM connected to the router but cannot see the LAN. probably being really stupid here, but any idea what i need to do?
