Advice needed - Less memory than meant to be on new FZ

Hello,
Got my FZ11S yesterday. Pretty happy with it (only real sore point is the excessive touchpad clicking noise).

Well, i was trying to get rid of the unneccessary added software and noticed that my total hardware capacity is only 139 GB (out of which 20 GB is the additional stuff)
So right now i have a memory capacity of only 119 GB. According to the sony site specs, the FZ11S is meant to have 160 gb out ouf which 7.3 gb is reserved for restore..so I should still have atleast 150 gb after getting rid of the bloatware.

This shortened capacity is mind boggling and want to know if anyone else faced the same problem and what they did to overcome it.

All comments welcome..

Welcome to ClubVAIO

GB's are measured by Hard drive manufacturers as 1000MB whereas windows measures them correctly at 1024MB therefore the reading will be lower than stated. This is quite normal.

You will probably find that your recovery partition is more like 9GB.

Your 160GB Hard Drive is 149GB in windows in the correct form.

Well..did not know that :smileyd_oh:..cheers for updating my knowledge..
so just to clear things up..the actual memory on the fz is 149gb on windows plus 9gb for the recovery partition and hence its showing me an overall total memory of 139 gb..am i right in assuming that the 9gb is included on top of the actual memory?

thank you so much for this as i was seriously thinking of going for a replacement..

Well the recovery partition as the name suggests is a partition on the hard drive so viewable in windows you will have about 140GB of space to play with.

My 200GB is only 176Gb in windows.

Its all to do with looking like its more when you buy the drive but microsoft have to use the computing values of 1024.

Phew..so its just a matter of different standards.. Shouldn't they specify it while advertising rather than baffling customers but I guess having 160 GB sounds much better than having 140 GB :smileythinking:

Thanks once again!
