Also try to plug the usb cable to an usb 2.0 port, not to an usb 3.0 port. I had problems updating the phone while plugged in to usb 3.0 ports under win8.
To fix this problem, connect the phone to PC Companion again, click start under Phone software update and click on the repair phone link
If the update does not start charge your battery. You need at least 40% battery power to initiate a software update. Charge the phone and then reconnect it to PC Companion.
Don’t use hubs and docks, connect the phone’s USB cable directly to the computer’s USB port. Do not remove or attach any other USB device during the update.

still not working for me
update your PC COMPANION to the last release.
still not working, i have also installed sus, both on newest version
Now that the Jelly Bean update is coming soon for our xperia s, can someone provide me a fix?
Edit: I got it to work by installing the intel drivers for usb 3.0 instead of the microsoft ones
Tried to update on win 8 and win 8.1 it doesn`t work. PC companion detects mobile phone but SUS and update in PC companion are unable to find driver. They detect unknown device. On same PC, using same USB port, same USB cable and same mobile phone, but on win 7 everything works fine. So there must be a problem when mobile phone enters "flashing mode" because then PC is unable to detect it or find drriver for mobile phone in that mod - powering phone with pressed volume down key.
