Hi,
I updated my 2 week old Xperia SP to the 254 version. Now, there is absolutely no sound. Not even when playing a song in the walkman. In fact I only installed the update because just before that, the internal speakers of my phone started going mute when in a call with someone. I find this entirely ridiculous. Even before that (on the first day or two) I had experienced isolated occasions of the internal speaker going mute during calls. What on earth do I do now???
I checked some of the other posts and didn't get a proper answer. So please don't tell me to look elsewhere. If you can bother to write that you can definitely post the solution.
(Personal note: I hate mainstream Samsungs and Apples and prefer the elegance of Sony. I used to have a k800i a loooong time ago. But this if unsolved might make the SP LAST EVER Sony I buy. And I hope the day never comes when I might have to discourage others from buying a Sony smartphone. But as it stands, I am very, frustrated.)
Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you try to put in a headset in phone and start playing a song from the Walkman player. Then remove the headset from the phone while the music is playing. Restart the phone and try to see if the sound is back on your phone.
You can also try to start your phone in safe mode to see if the problem might be related to any 3rd party app you have installed on your phone:

If the problem persists in safe mode I suggest that you try to repair the phone software using PC Companion:

In PC Companion, press start on Support Zone > Start on Update the phones software > Press the blue link that says "Repair phone".

Thanks alot for taking the time for this thorough explanation. After a bout of frustration it somewhat reinstates the faith in you guys.
Btw, the first suggestion worked!
I am suffering from the same issue, no sound in internal speaker, even no sound when i make a call. Please help. I am very thankful to you
I did the 1st two steps but no hope, this new update 254,,,,, I am really frustuated.
I too have same problem. With calls to and from the phone I often can neither hear or speak to the other person. Just noticed however if I press the speakerphone soft button the mike and speaker become live.
I agree, this is rediculous and was 100% caused by the latest update. When will a bug fix be available or how do I reset back to previous firmware?
