I have the exact issue as described above.  When plugged in my phone only registers a red light.  However it is unresposive to holding the power + volume up knobs.  When I plug it in, after a short while it will display a SONY (the word only) splash screen for several minutes, then returns to being ostensibly dead.

I've also tried holding the volume up while plugging the micro USB into the phone, per the Repair feature of the Sony Bridge for MAC software.  It is not able to find the phone.

If I hold power + volume up while the SONY splash screen is displayed it registers a single vibration and a blue light blinks once.

Thank you for your help.

@Sebastian77 - Have you tried the repair as per my post above?

Yes.  I have tried your above instructions in exact detail.  Furthermore, I have since installed the Sony PC Companion software on a Windows PC, and now attempted to connect the phone on both Windows and Mac several times.

The Sony PC Companion software is unable to recognize that the phone has been plugged into the computer.

Thank you from your prompt response.

To solve the issue, open Device Manager on your computer to reinstall the driver for your device while your device is connected with your PC via a USB cable.

Microsoft Windows Vista and 7 users

To open Device manager on your computer

Click on the Start button.
In the Search box, type device manager, and then press enter.

Microsoft Windows 8 users

Method 1

To open Device manager on your computer

Click Windows Key + X to open the Start Menu.
Select Device Manager from the Start Menu.

Method 2

To open Device manager on your computer

Click the Desktop Tile to open the Desktop.
Click >> at the bottom right of the taskbar.
Select Control Panel from the Menu.
Select Device Manager from the list of control panel items.
Note: If you do not see the screen with the Device Manager option, click the View by drop-down menu and select Small icons.

Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 users

To open Device manager on your computer

On the desktop, right-click on My Computer and click Properties.
In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab.
In the Hardware, tab click the Device Manager button.

To reinstall the drivers for your device

Scroll down to the Universal Serial Bus controllers (USB section) of the Device Manager window.
Look for an MTP Device: Media Device, Unknown Device or any other reference to your phone. Click on this entry and choose "Uninstall" whilst leaving the device connected.
Wait a few minutes, and the computer will reinstall the drivers for the device.
Now, the phone is accessible via Computer/My Computer on your computer.

Hi, I am using Windows 7, and used Device Manager as you suggested to remove an "Unknown Device".

However, after waiting (an hour) no new drivers were installed.  I unplugged the phone, waited a moment, then plugged it back in.  No effect.

Windows does not see the phone.

Thank you for your ongoing help!

Hi.  This is still an unresolved issue.  Can you please advise on an appropriate solution.  Thank you.

My opinion:  Reading online seems to indicate that the SONY screen is displayed while the Android kernel is booting, the fact that it never gets past that phase may indicate that the OS was fundamentally corrupted during the OS upgrade.

A procedure to completely reinsall the OS and any firmware is an acceptable solution.  I am not concerned with any data that is on the device.  It is nearly a brand new phone, there's nothing on there of any importance.

With your phone switched off fully then holding the volume down key and plugging in the usb cable does anything happen,

If you are turning your phone on and connecting your usb cable then nothing will happen as your phone needs to fully booted before your Pc will see it - As you have said above holding volume up then connecting the usb is for Fastboot for use with unlocking bootloader or flashing custon roms - In this case you need volume down which is Flashmode

If it is been seen via volume down then Flashmode is working and your phone can be repaired using either PCC or SEUS found here http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/
