How do I enter SMS Smileys (emoticons)?

I have just started using an Xperia S with ICS.  Previously I had an Xperia X10.

How do I enter the smileys?  On the X10 you "long pressed" the numeric key and they appeared.

Notice the smiley face next to 12!? and Spacebar - Tap that and a box appears with a load of them

But I've just noticed you said X10 this is the Xperia S forum so it may be different

1. I am using an Xperia S (my previous phone was an X10).

2. I do not have the smiley face between the 12!? and the space bar

By default, you don't see the Smiley's button activated. Click on the settings button which is shown in the picture. And you will see an option to "Add extra buttons". You will have 2 check boxes:

1. comma & dot button

2. smiley button

After that you will be able to see smiley button inbetween "121!" and "Space" button.

Unfortunately I do not have a settings button either   On that row I have "12!?", "Space bar" and "the return symbol".

Okie, so if you are in alphabet keyboard its normal that you don't see the settings key. click on '121!' button, now you must be able to see the "Settings" button.
