Headphone socket not working

I've just bought some new headphones - Altec Lansing Muzx® Ultra - MZX606, but for some reason I get no sound when plugged into the phone and music still comes out of the built-in speaker, I also tried the FM radio but that won't work and says I need to plug in headphones which I have.  Is the headphone socket knackered and needing repair?  or is there a setting somewhere to enable it?

Nb. I've tested the headphones on another MP3 player and a friends mobile and they work perfectly.

Cheers

hey there might be two reasons for the headphoens not working !! one is that whenever you plug a new device a new hardware identified pops up on the notification area !! this makes the necessary changes to make the hardware work !! it might be that the xp failed to recognize your hardware and hence was notplaying !! i suggest you try ur original sony head phones and some other !!! secondly it might be that the headphones are nt compatible with sony xperia p !! and thirdly which is a really rare possibility is that ur headphone socket is bad and u need a replacement

Cheers nabendu, sadly it turns out that my new headphones aren't compatible with my Xperia P, as the supplied headphones do indeed work fine.  Although it's weird as I thought any headphones with a 3.5" jackplug would work like they do on anyother MP3 player and mobile phone.
