Disable predictive text

Would someone please advise me how to totally disable all predictive text functionality in Xperia X8 ?? I've had this problem with every single mobile phone I've ever had and cannot possibly imagine why anyone would want something so mindlessly stupid. The #$@(%&# phone cannot have a clue what word I want as is clearly demonstrated by the fact that it ALWAYS gets it wrong !!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Try installing the HTC_IME keyboard and you can then turn off predictive in the settings, have a look at this thread for instructions on how to install it

'Fraid that doesn't help as I can't install anything. The only webpage accessible is some apparently european Vodafone one (I'm in Australia... everything else is inaccessible including google.com & google.com.au. The SIM definitely isn't restricted, locked, nobbled or whatever but I haven't been able to figure out how to get to any other website. I've enabled WiFi but even the Vodafone website is PAINFULLY slow ... shouldn't be a problem though as the WiFi links to a proper ADSL connection.

Do you mean the quick text option? If it is that then while typing tap on the icon reading Eng on top right ans select option multitap.

Possibly. When I type anything, the phone pre-empts what I'm attempting enter and replaces my letters with something it apparently presumes I mean to enter, however what it selects is always completely different. For example, last night I was trying to use Wisepilot & Maps to find a 'Coulson Street' (which was replaced by Cleavage Street) and later Reedy Creek (wihch was replaced by 'Teddy Creek'. What I wish to do is to totally disable any attempt by the phone to tell me what I want .... I know EXACTLY what I want to enter and I certainly don't need some moronic machine trying to second guess me.

There is no 'ENG' visible anywhere I can see. I've read something about that appearing on Xperia X10 but it certainly isn't visible on my X8

I think this is all to do with the settings, if I understand your question correctly.  I don't know if this works with your GPS thing, but when you go to write a text message and have the keyboard on the screen, there is a spanner / wrench symbol on the bottom line, just to the left of the return key.  Tap that, and then select 'Quick text settings' and then 'Spelling correction'.  On mine there are three options - 'Automatic', 'Select manually' and 'Off'.  Select 'Off' and you should be fine, for text messages at least.  I think it is a general setting for the phone (you can get to the same options screens through Settings - Locale & text - Default imput, so I think it will solve your problem.  Do let us know... You can toggle between different languages on the X8 if you have more than one writing language set up in the text input settings, but that's an aside.

Yeah that seems to have done the trick thanks. Much appreciated. I tried the GPS applications again and the phone didn't attempt to mess with my entry this time. Dunno about SMS but thats of no interest to me anyway, as far as I'm concerned phones are things on which to exchange words verbally rather than send the zillion text messages necessary to impart as much intelligence as a two minute phone call. Why FFS is predictive text enabled anyway ?? .... I've never once found it less than a total disaster on any mobile phone & with any application or function. Even spell correction is a PITA, but then when I did my schooling a few centuries ago we learned to spell properly. Guess like always the 'wet behind the ears' demented juvenile clowns who design systems never actually use them.  It would be nice to have a PROPER manual with all the necessary information like this readily acessible. Whilst my experience with the quality of SonyEricsson hardware has been satisfactory, the learning curve with touch screen devices is such that really explicit documentation would be a good move. Even something as trivial as answering an incoming phone call is less than intuitive for someone using a touch screen device for the first time.

Glad that seems to have done the trick. I assume your question about predictive text was rhetorical, but I find that it can be useful in highlighting typos, and if there is something that's a pain to type out, being able to tap one of the choices after typing just the first two or three letters is something I find helpful at times.  That all said, I do agree with your general point that you know better than the phone what you wish to type, and certainly too much automation can get in the way and make people lazy. I would agree wholeheartedly about the manual.  I suppose the problem, in part, is that the phones can be customised to a great extent, and any added applications or features could therefore render any detailed manual almost useless for some people.  There is a more detailed manual on the Sony Ericsson website, but I rarely look at it.  Reading on a screen just isn't the same. You didn't ask about this, but often pressing the menu key (the one on the left with four squares above it) can bring up some useful stuff about the phone, and 'long-pressing' some things can bring up options. Anyway, hope you enjoy the phone.  Do ask if you get stuck with anything else... Anyway,

From my point of view I'd definitely prefer all forms of predictive text functionality to be disabled by default as its been nothing but a monumental PITA to me, furthermore its typically difficult to say the least figuring how to switch it off. In the instances I mentioned with two different navigation applications, there didn't appear to be any option whatever to select from various options, the $%@*) phone swapped my completed word for something totally different and insisted that was what I meant ie when I entered 'Coulson Street' & was told I really wanted 'Cleavage Street'. A bit later I entered 'Reedy Creek' & was told I really needed 'Teddy Creek' (needless to say there are no such places as 'Cleavage Street' or 'Teddy Creek' anywhere in Australia !!!!!).  What kind of imbecilic software developer does it take to assume a mindless piece of hardware has more intelligence than a sentient being with well above average IQ and who has been surviving on planet earth for over half a century ??  If indeed its necessary to include such a moronic function then at least ensure that those of us who detest it with a vengeance (undoubtedly the majority of users) aren't inconvenienced.  I appreciate the advice about the menu key, that snippet isn't obvious anywhere in the information I've encountered previously. My beef with the official documentation relates more to really basic functions rather than to 'add-ons' as such. Something as trivial as answering an incoming voice call on a touch screen device is so different from that on a conventional keyboard phone as to require detailed explanation. Switching from portrait to landscape display is also essential for those of us with adult size fingers .. its tiring having to re-enter a character a zillion times because ones fingers hit the miniscule keys in portrait mode.

click that and select keybaord settings after that open text input settings then open Word suggestions then select
